Having a shot at Micarta scales

Post by standy99 »

Have something different in mind for this handle. Still thinking but stay tuned.

Start with some micarta and some G10 liners

Thinking red with these (Chad called them chocolate blocks)
Image

Last minute change to toxic yellow (looks green due to low light)
Image

Be sure to sand different ways prior to epoxy
Image

Clamps ready and wax paper ready
Image

Find milk lids are great for epoxy mixing
Image

Clamped and done. Notice the glove. (Always wear gloves and mask mixing and using epoxy)

Rough sand into shape. Not sure if I will leave the contours yet. First time with linen Micarta so just playing. Want a rough out door knife more that a pretty knife so they might stay

So much easier with a knife makers vice….

Fun to see your progress here. This one is going to look great. The color contrast and and the material choices are very appealing to me. I can also imagine a leather sheath looking nice on this one too.

Micarta is interesting to work with.

I say this is giving me a appreciation for materials and knife makers.

Big shout out to Spyderco for giving us a great blade and steel to start us off…..

What grit do you typically take your micarta scales up to? And how do you finish them?

I love the look of a smooth polished finish but wouldn't that result in a lack of grip if your hands are wet?

Still a bit to do on above as I have to take the edges off, going for a flat sided scale on this one so just rounding the corners. Have a Chuck Ward knife vice ordered from J Neilson,s site

From what I have read, it depends on types of Micarta, I am going the rough feel for the above knife so I will see how it goes. Will start at 80 and just see.

Well done.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Thanks for sharing!
What abrasives did you use to shape the micarta handle?
Belt sander / freehand sandpaper ? Dry or wet?

I use a Dremel to get to squared off shape.

Then a drill with a 80 grit one of these. ( didn’t open the 120 grit )

Finish off with a heap of hand sanding.

Had to go up to 600 wet and dry (dry) to get the brass tubes smooth ( probably could spend a bit more time on them )

All done dry with a half face respirator :D
