MT30 - what's your guess?

#1

Post by archangel »

Are you betting on MagnaCut aka Larrinite? ;) After all, it sounded like Sal and the gang ordered the material some time ago.

Or is it gonna be Rex-121?

Or Vanax?

15V?

Or Vanadis 8?

I'm putting my money on......

... Rex-121. MagnaCut will be MT32.

Larrin, why haven't I heard about this yet? What can you tell us about it?

I'd agree, probably not Magnacut.

I think Rex 121 and Vanax SC are pretty good guesses..... Or maybe I just want them to be good guesses.

I think it's going to be one of the steels already mentioned. It would be cool to have something in a high tungsten tool steel like RexAAA or REX95. There's also 2 steels that PSM Industries made T15HV and T42HV but I never seen it used anywhere.

After the Spy27 mule team was announced I was thinking about what other steels Spyderco might use in the mule. There were some sprints in Rex45 and S45VN, so I thought these were good candidates for the next mules. A bit later the S45VN mule was announced, so my guess is that MT30 will be Rex45.

I wold like to see MT30 with MagnaCut, but don’t think so, because of the excitement around the new steel.
Probably it will be the some Rex...

If it will be, why would they delay to announce it since they know how to make this steel right ?

You never know maybe they decided to run the higher profit margin knives first. Then supply could have run low pushing off its release as a mule.

I would probably guess REX 121. Sal has already said that he was testing it in a Sage LW I believe.

I think it will be REX 45.
My reasoning / guess for the delay: all the REX 45 Sprints were more important,
Native Chief had a long delay;
so, either steel availability issues or Golden factory running on full capacity for all the other models.

Like Joshcrutchley1 says, they may have had issues with getting enough supplies. It took therm a fairly long time for all the Rex45 sprints to be delivered (though I can't speak from experience if it was longer than usual, but I think there were already 2 new reveals before most of them got delivered).
By that same logic, it might as well be Z-wear as the Z-wear/micarta Shaman was close to a year in the making.

If it's neither of these, then I'm guessing 15V (if I remember correctly they are working on a 15V folder designed by BBB?)

I forgot about SRS-13. Sal was asking for feedback about this steel in a mule team in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=86149

So now I've named 4 candidate steels for MT30, yeah I have no clue  . I'll have to wait and see.

T15HV seems fairly close to CPM-T15. Do you have any thoughts on how it might be different?

My metallurgy-fu isn't strong enough to even guess, really.

T15hv C-1.85/Cr-5/W-13/V-6.9/Co-5
Cpm-t15 C-1.6/Cr-4/W-12/V-4.9/Co-5
Maxamet C-2.5/Cr-4.8/W-13/V-6/Co-10
Z-Max C-2.0/Cr-4.0/W-10/V-5/Co-9

It has 2% higher vanadium and a .25% bump in carbon. I would imagine it would produce more vanadium carbide hence the H(igh)V(anadium)tag. In all honesty I don't know because the Cr also went up 1%. I do know after Cr gets too high you start to get vanadium enriched M7C3 instead of pure VC.
They're probably not far off from one another though. Z-max and Maxamet have more carbon so they might form more carbides.

We've had CPM S35VN. Maybe this will finally be the long-delayed CPM S30V Mule! :p :D

I'm still waiting on that Gin-1 mule :D
There's a few ingot and PM steel pairs I'd like to try in a mule team like 154CM/CPM-154 and D2/CPM-D2.
