Might there be an AEB-L mule someday?
Re: Might there be an AEB-L mule someday?
I have the Urban sprint. Despite the pivot becoming un-indexed I enjoy it (especially how easily it sharpens), but due to the smaller size it’s mostly been on box opening duty.
Would purchase a mule if it were HT’d higher. Curious to see what Shawn is hinting at and start testing the steel with more serious cutting tasks.

It is my understanding that we gave our maker in Maniago Shawns heat treating instructions to bring the blade to 63Rc. If any of you have one, let me know. I believe we have some at the office that we can test. Have any of you tested one?

I'd be happy to send mine off to be tested but I need some testing resources, as in a who and where.

Sal,
I have an Urban Sprint and can drop it off at the SFO for you to test if you like.

I would be down for a mule as well!
Sal, if y’all want to do another kitchen knife in AEB-L, I’ve got a new design that I could send you.

Interesting. I had always assumed it was closer to 60 HRC, but that’s what happens when you assume. I’d be happy to send mine in if you want replicate testing.

Hi,
Thanx for the offers.
We pinged one yesterday and it averaged 59.6, so I lied. I thought we had sent info, but Susan said we didn't.
So Shawn, I'm going to need that heat treating info again should we go for a Mule?

Hi Dazen,
No plans for more kitchen knives at this time. We're still bringing the Murray Carter's in and I'm working on a basic serrated Utility (Hanalei) in a corrosion resistant steel.
You can always send ideas to Peter. Peterj@spyderco.com

If you pushed the HRC up on AEB-L, it would make a great Mule. Testing out an old school steel with a new heat treat is right in line with the spirit of the project. :)

I agree so much I quoted it so it could read twice. :)

Hey Shawn,
Do you have some secret heat treat that gets it there? Or should we just ask them to find it?

The steel becomes noticably different at 62-63 and is pretty impressive at 64-65.

Sal,
I'll send you an email.
I'd really like folks to see what those steel can do, it's quite enjoyable.

Thank you, Shawn!
Re: Might there be an AEB-L mule someday?
Yeah, thanks Shawn. Now I've got another Mule to buy. :D
Re: Might there be an AEB-L mule someday?
I am shopping for a Kephart and will probably buy one before a Spyderco variant is produced, but I would really like a Native Chief in AEB-L G10 in some earthy color.
Or as always - a Military.

Re: Might there be an AEB-L mule someday?
I’d be interested in an AEB-L mule with DBH’s heat treat recipe. I like my Urban well enough, but it’s not a superb test mule.

Hey Shawn,
Use my aol email address. My Spyderco email is being funky.
