Hopeful, the straight spine Mule Team 28 Spy27 turns into a regular production piece.

And then nobody'll be interested in it, because it's actually available? (Well, us Mule Team Sixers would be interested, but the rest of the world, ie, the flippers?)

The mule team slowed up significantly from early days and even stopped. Stopping got everyone excited again and wanting it back.

He's absolutely right. Part of what drives interest in the mule team is scarcity, plain and simple. If S-co puts out enough mules where everyone who wants one, gets one, watch the interest plummet.

I don't know if that's 100% accurate. I wasn't around for the "slowing interest" period, but I do know the last mule to not sell out before they took a hiatus from the mule project was PD1. The PD1 had a $70 price tag and seemingly less "name brand recognition" than Cruwear. SPY27 has had knives made in it thinking it'd be Spyderco's new flagship steel (before Magnacut was released) and sold for $50. The release of Magnacut will lower the demand for regular production SPY27 mules, but otherwise I think it would still have been a really popular item.

There were no Mule Teams for 3 years (2018-2020). Before that they were priced $70-$110 and 700-800 produced. The ones released since (all 4 in 2021) have been priced at $50 and only about 500 produced. The hiatus, lower price and lower quantities all helped sell them out faster. I’m guessing we’ll see another Mule Team announced in the next Reveal in September and delivered before the end of the year.

  1. Mule Team CPM-SPY27 MT28P - FEB 2021
  2. Mule Team CPM-S45VN MT31P - APR 2021
  3. Mule Team Z-Max PM MT29P - JUN 2021
  4. Mule Team Z-Wear PM MT30P - AUG 2021

Sal mentioned 6 new steels in the pipeline on reboot of Mule Team program, so I say 2 more steels at 500 or so before Magnacut which will be a larger than seen before drop.

If you're wrong, I don't wanna be right!

Not about right and wrong, just seemed like there was more hype around SPY27 until MagnaCut was released. I really do think the popularity of MagnaCut will hurt demand for knives in SPY27.

The only word I've seen on that end was the following quotes. I had thought Magna might be the next mule, so I thought maybe Z-wear would be the last 500. Guess we'll find out.

Hi Michael,
The current plan is to up the quantity to 1500 pcs per run and go from there.
sal
Good news! A run of 1,500 pieces for MT is a lot better than 500-600 for the most recent runs. Will this higher quantity apply to the upcoming Z-Wear PM and CPM-MagnaCut Mule Teams?

Hi Ramzar,
It will be for the Magnacut Mule Team run. I don't think it will be for the Z-wear.

Hi All,

The steel for the next 6 Mule Teams is already made so this problem is likely to persist for a while.

Sal had a Rex-121 test knife (Sage, I think) and was also asking questions of forum members who owned Rex 121 blades.

If one of those is Rex 121, it's going to be an insane frenzy.

Several of the last few Mules they released before re-starting the program were available for quite a while. I bought PD#1, A11, B70P, B75P, and RWL 34 in 2019. For some of those it was years after they were released. If I recall LC200N was available for about a year after it released as well.

And triple prices on secondary, unfortunately.
Hope with the increased quantity it gets easier to get the upcoming ones.

There were no Mule Teams from October 2017 to February 2021 (over 3 years). The Mule Teams on or just before October 2017 were selling for $70+ and about 700-800 produced. Those released since February 2021 were selling for $50.00 and 500 produced. Now, we have the upcoming MagnaCut selling for $75.00 and apparently about 1,500 produced!

Which steels are in MT32, MT33 & MT34 which looks like were planned before MT35 (MagnaCut)?

I read Vanax SuperClean, Rex 121, M398, CPM-154, …

I have another cluster of questions: Which of the MTs introduced their steel for the very first time in our Spydieverse, and the steel was then also used for other Spyderco knives? I know MagnaCut is such an example. There WILL be more MC Spydies.

The SPY27 MT on the other hand was dropped after there were already Spydies available in this steel. Other MT examples of this category, where MT use was not the first?

Last but not least, which steels have only been used for Mule Team project but have not found their way into any other Spyderco release (and why)?
