I sure hope more than 600 are made in these new steels or perhaps a second run if sold out quickly. Surely Forum feedback could guage demand. $50 for SPY27 is a great deal!
$50 for Spy27 should be regular production. :)

Red river gum is rot and termite resistant. Great for scales with a soak in a Danish oil. I wouldn’t stabilise it. I would soak it in Danish oil for 24 hours and let dry for the same that’s it. No need for vacuum stabilising.

Brown Mallee and Bimble Box are a very dense couple of woods that are superb for scales. With little need for anything other than a oil once fitted.

Most Australian hardwoods are dense and due to slow growing and they aren’t prone to splitting or warping in a handle as long as they are oiled.

Would love to swap some Desert iron wood. Will send you a PM in a week or two as may be a bit closer. ;)

What's a good way to have one set of scales to swap between mules?

One timber I would look up is Huon pine.

The most sought after wood for boat building in the world in its day. A Tasmanian timber that only grows in one place.
Most stocks come from a dam/lake that all the timber floated up after a valley being flooded.

Buy or make a set of removable scales. Spyderco sells them on the Mule section of the website in black.
I bought the scales a sheath and a mule to start with and have since made a few handles in non removable timber of other mules.

Here are the removable Glow in the Dark ones I just replaced the Spyderco ones with.

Buy the Halprin 3d scales that Spyderco sells on their web site. I have a set and they are excellent. Get a sheath too. I prefer the plastic (I think it's kydex--maybe boltaron?) sheath because I like to carry horizontally just right of my belt buckle, which is totally acceptable for EDC where I live.

That Huon pine looks really hard to come by. The only pieces I can find can only be shipped within Australia.

I'm still hoping for a Vanax Mule!

Oh, and for the SPY27 to be released. :D

To bump this thread a bit:

Reveal 7 brought Z-max mule, so I was wondering when could we expect the S45VN and SPY27?

Still shown as "Coming soon" on the website.

The just received Spyderco byte January 2021 issue has a lot about the Mule Teams!
