How'd you wrap your mule handles with paracord? (pics welcome)

#1

Post by archangel »

I will try to wrap my coming MT23 with some paracord I have at hand. Obviously there are different techniques how to do it, with different results. How did you do yours? Feel free to post pics, maybe even a link to a video showing how to do it in that particular way. And please rate the difficulty.

Thanks in adcance!!

Link to a How To that I put together and posted on Blade forums a while back. It's how I've done all of mine. I think you may need to be logged in there to get the link to work.

I'll see if I can get Photobucket to cooperate long enough to put it up here.

By request, here's how I do mine.

First, get a Mule (duh).

Image

For safety, tape the edge. Leaving the tip guard on is a good idea, too. Feel free to skip this if you enjoy bleeding and spending money on E.R. visits.

Image

Image

Personally, I hurt myself by accident often enough to avoid more cuts when possible, so I use another layer of duct tape over the first.

Image

Next, you need some cord. 10 feet works well. This 9 foot piece was laying around, so I used it, but it turned out too short for my usual wrist loop.

Image

Start at the butt end and lace the cord through the large holes. This will give the cord an anchor to keep it from slipping later.

Next comes one of the tricky bits: feeding both ends through one of the small holes. Having one end melted and pinched to a point makes this easier.

Image

Image

Once you've managed that, you can pull all the loops tight and the friction of two strands through a small hole will keep things tight.

Image

To start the actual wrap, first throw a loop on each side.

Image

Image

Next, tuck each end through the loop on the other side.

Image

Image

Pull the ends until the loops are tight and positioned over the lacing you ran through the big holes.

Image

Image

Image

Then it is pretty much repeat until you run out of handle.

Once you get past this point, you'll have to back off the tension a little to keep the loops from slipping toward the butt.

Image

Keep wrapping, pulling each loop as tight as you can without slippage.

Image

Image

When you get down to this point, it's time to feed the ends though the last small hole.

Once you have the lines run through, it will keep the loops from slipping off the end, so you can tighten everything up. I generally use a pair of needle nose pliers (well, my ever-present Leatherman Wave) to pull all the slack out.

Image

Image

Image

Then all you have to do is tie a tight knot to hold the ends. I use a diamond knot.

Pull the tape and your Mule is ready for duty.

I just realized that your mule must be one of the older designs, with small holes in one horizontal line with the bigger holes. The newer design has two vertically aligned small holes at the blade end of the handles. Will it still work if I use the upper small hole next to the beginning of the blade? Maybe you've used this technique with a newer mule as well...

Edit: looking at the pics again, I'm pretty sure it will just look a little bit different at the blade end of the handle, but should still work. :) Now all I need is a good spirit to let my MT shipment slip though customs untouched...

I did that tutorial five years ago, so yes, the one in the pictures is older, but I did the LC200N mule the same way. The hole placement hasn't changed.

Edit to add: MT01P and MT25P side by side

@ yablanowitz: you say one needs 10 feet cord. Google says that's more than 3 meters. Is that right??

That is correct, although three meters will be enough to cover the handle. I used to use a bit more to allow a loop I used for a wrist lanyard.

Well, apparently I have significantly less talent and patience than you. And I think I made a few wrong turnes, which resulted in a much lower level of symmetry and beauty. Makes your result even more outstanding. But that's ok. I am ok with my result:

Once again a big Thank You, yablanowitz!

P.S.: Seems that the neutral picture which is being used by :spyder: on their website for all mules with model number higher than 9 is wrong. MT23 also has one small centered hole right next to the blade, not two alligned vertically.

I hadn't even noticed that picture until you mentioned that. When I went and looked at it, you are right, their picture is wrong.

I think yours turned out well, especially for a first effort. I've had a lot of practice.

I'm allowing myself to bump this thread since I wanted to paracord wrap one of my Mules before finishing the scales.
A huge thank you to yablanowitz for sharing, it's the best wrapping method I've found so far !

Here's how mine looks like :

Image

I used something I bought years ago. The store titled it paracord but I'm pretty sure it's not paracord, or really terrible paracord. It's working very nicely none the less ! I had a bit of trouble passing both strands through the 3mm holes but I succeeded ^^

PS : Happy 10 years old for this tutorial btw :respect
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.
