All steels should have a Mule!

#1

Post by Josh Crutchley »

I was thinking it would be cool if all the steels Spyderco's used in the past could have a Mule. There a few steels the came and went before the Mule Team project started. I know there's ones that probably won't make sense like Aus6 or the most likely unavailable ATS-55. But some might be interesting like CPM-S60V, CPM-S30V, and maybe 440c. All three seem to do very well in catra at the HRC levels. There's also CPM-D2 and CPM-10V that don't have a Mule.

One each in 440C and CPM-D2. Both are awesome steels I use heavily.

I think a tungsten carbide mule would be awesome and it should be added to this list.

People want all these mules (and I'm certainly in that camp). Spyderco has a lot on their plate and also has a Mule pipeline on their plate that covers the foreseeable future.

Has the forum ever considered organizing with a smaller shop who would take on a kickstarter/indiegogo style mule project? It's obviously not the same as a Spyderco mule, but when there's a list of several dozen steels people want a mule for, we are talking decades before spyderco might actually get to those asks. I suspect this is the wrong kind of project for smaller shops to take on, because they need to focus on higher margin goods, but wishing for different steels and things spyderco skipped over in the past is probably just as outlandish.

All Larrin’s steels need a Mule. MagnaTuff, MagnaWear, Niomax, ApexUltra, whatever else is under development.

And then we need Vanax. And Vancron SC. And the last stock available of Nitrobe77 (if any is available).

Selfishly, I would love to see more steels known for toughness. I feel we are already spoiled with the amount of steels, I would just love to see some of the popular ones from before to be re released, perhaps at a different hardness or heat treat protocol.
