Why was the G10 Crossbill discontinued?

I bought several of the G10 Crossbills when they were readily available, to give away as gifts.
I kept a plain edge version for myself.
Later I started looking for a serrated version, and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Luckily I got one not too long ago, but paid a pretty penny for it.
Is there a reason why these great hawkbills were DC'd? Lack of sales? Difficulty in production?

Good question. IMHO the comet hole actually suits this blade shape and make it look much more cooler then the Spyderco version.

Probably slow sales.

It seems that a lot of very nice knives get discontinued. I suppose that it would be fairly impossible to keep all the different models going. I've no idea how many are currently in production (does anyone know?). I know this is slightly off topic, however, I've just purchased the EuroEdge. It is gorgeous, overbuilt and heavy. However, this too has been axed. Some people undoubtedly will say thank goodness for that. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's just that I feel quite lucky due to this model not normally available in the UK. I've also picked up the UK leaf shaped penknife with the s110v steel. This should last a bit. I'm not very good at sharpening knives so all's well with this idea.
I'll push off now as I'm struggling with finding my way around this site a little bit. Still it makes it more interesting.
Regards to all. Littlefoot

Hi Littlefoot,

Welcome to our forum.

When sales are slow on a item and we have to maintain inventory or disco the model and move on to other new models. It is the market that determines what goes and what stays. The reasons for slow sales might be a number of things; design, price, market just too small, negative reviews, etc.

On the sharpening, I would suggest a Sharpmaker. Watch the video, for a better understanding and use the tool. Being able to sharpnen is better than not being able to. The Sharpmaker can make that difference in your hobby.

Thanks sal, that's what I figured. Anyway it seems the stainless steel handled versions are still selling well as they are omnipresent everywhere I look. I'm just surprised that the G10 version didn't sell as well, as it seems to me that knife enthusiasts would prefer the G10.

I don't think that knife enthusiasts (afi's) are buying many byrds. I know some do, but in general, I think byrds are purchased by non afi's just looking for a good cheap knife.

I buy the byrds for something to keep around when I need to lend out a knife, or for a backup to keep in the car or toolbox or anywhere else I want to stash one.

Can you PLEASE bring the G10 Crossbill back in Orange G10 full SE??? This would be a great, cheap, yard knife! Seems ashame to let such a great value design languish.

Hi Steelcity,

We have to make thousands at a time when dealing with China. Thousands of a slow moving item take a long time to sell and tie up funds in inventory that can be used for more popular models.

I wish the broader market could understand how great these are for yard work. Maybe do an Orange G10 Home Depot exclusive in full SE?? Or Blue G10 Lowes exclusive?? Or both!!

Have you ever rebranded knives? You could maybe rebrand them as Kobalt (Lowes) or Husky (Home Depot) as well? Clamshell packaging with the knife open inside to show off that amazing Spyderedge blade?? :)

Home Depot has 2,200 stores in North America. A few at each store and you've got an order of 10,000 of these!

My G10 full serrated crossbill is hands down the best box knife I've ever had. And it sharpens up really easily afterward. Wish I'd bought a handful way back when.

Didn't realize there was a serrated g10 crossbill. Would have loved one.
