I have read that mutation acid can be used to etch Damascus metal blades, does anyone have any suggestions?

I have only ever heard of muratic being used as brick mason's acid. My only experience etching has been with Ferric Chloride and it was on VG-10, Aus-8, etc. No experience at all with welded steels.
