I think it is unlikely that Spyderco would use Eagle, Hawk, or Falcon as Al Mar already use them in their ultralight range.

But, there are plenty of bird names to go around. I too am excited for the new Byrd designs, they make great gifts for knife beginners and serve as beater knives whenever I go fishing. You can always find someone with butter fingers who is in need of a knife.

I don't think we'll do much with the Catbyrd at this time. Response wan't very good. Not sure why? On the
Parabyrd, the lock is difficult to make right. We'd have to work with them. Maybe in the future.

You are correct on those names and that's why we avoided them. Any special bird names you prefer?

A nice serrated all black hawkbill Byrd would be awesome named either Crow or Raven (If those names haven't already been used on a Spyderco or Byrd product before...I'm pretty green around here). Or a large and extra robust Byrd model called Ostrich.

Heh...I get to put my foot in my mouth already...Raven and Crow down. Ostrich is still up for grabs though I think...and I still think a nice extra robust Byrd for a super solid work knife would be awesome.

Sal, I would love to see an Emerson Opener Cara Cara 2 or Meadowlark 2. Not sure how feasible it would be on budget folders but how about a red handled model called the Cardinal or a deep green called the Mallard? I would also suggest one that's a small slipit like the Squeak? (Sparrow, maybe)

Going down a list, I like: Loon, Wren, Twite

Razorbill seems like a good name. :)

Pewee could be a good name for a small knife.

I like how one's Latin name is Mergus Serrator.

I was thinking about this. An easy model to think it would work good with would be the Cara Cara Rescue.

I'd have to look through the byrd section of the catalog to come up with other ideas.


I'd really like to see Byrd explore some other options.

A small Byrd with a thick blade, strong lock, and an Emerson opener.
What are our Byrd LBK's? IMO, Byrd should have a variety of LBK options.

I think my top 3 choices for the Emerson opener would be the Cara Cara, the Cara Cara Rescue, and the Crossbill. I like the above idea of a heavily built shorter blade as well but I think those 3 existing models would be great to try it with.

An "overbuilt" model could be called the Moa...

Karambit of some type? Maybe call it a Talon? It would be the answer for people like me (I'm likely the only one) who want a budget Kbit that carries Spyderco's awesome quality.

Still hoping for a Byrd version of the Caly 3.5...
