Re: Are Spyderco prices getting out of your reach?

^^^ This, they do continue to offer a wide selection. They do seems to be getting more spendy as one moves outside the core Spyderco offerings, but it's understandable as the complexity increases and types of materials gets more diverse. For users there is always the secondary market which does tend...

Re: Spyderco with the thinnest blade?

The Catcherman model with MBS-26 blade steel had a significantly thinner blade than it's AUS-8 predecessor. I do also agree that Spyderco's kitchen blades like the K-04 and K-05 models have relatively thin blades. The USN Catcherman in H1 has a blade that's only 1.8mm thick. FWIW, the Spyderco cata...

Re: Spyderco C09 CoPilot Varieties

After all these years the brass lined CoPilots are still the hardest to open of all of them for me. I would describe them as anti-smooth (not exactly rough). It might have been the original oil they used drying out, not really sure. Also, I have not seen a brass lined version of this model with only...

Re: SpyderPac - not completely impressed

My packs must be really old because I don't think any of them have any kind of support rod in them. They all flex just a bit when bent, but the velcro holds them fairly tight.

I wonder when this change was made, maybe when they went from 32 to 30 knives per pack?

Re: Schempp Bowie impressions

Just ordered one of these beauties today and I can't wait to get it. Especially after all the talk about the smoothness. To date, the smoothest Spyderco I cary is the original Viele (PE, AUS-8) and I hope this one is as amazing. From the sound of things, it will be. From looking at the pictures the ...

... or as a miniature "sculpture" ... Lol, well put. I have far too many miniature sculptures these days :D Also don't forget to pick up the pre-need replacements of your most used models before they are discontinued. One nice thing about Spyderco is that they seem to give a decent amount...

Re: My ATS 55 Civilian ?

One of the problems with documenting the Civilian is that, although it has been in production since 1990, it did not even start appearing in Spyderco catalogs until 2000. Sounds like yours was probably made when they were transitioning from the GIN-1 version, which used a regular clip, to the ATS-5...

Re: My ATS 55 Civilian ?

My memory of the time was that the linerless ATS-55 G-10 version of the Civilian was a very short run. Even back then, there weren't many of them available. I don't have numbers or hard data unfortunately, but I believe that Spyderco pretty quickly updated the clip, added the liner then moved to VG-...

Re: Spyderco's Hidden & Forgotten models

I think the Navigator is one of those forgotten models too. Probably because of the Dragonfly which is kind of similar. I love the Navigator without the vents in the handle. Those scales are so buttery smooth and this is one of the smaller models that also happens to fit perfectly in my hand. Love ...

Re: Old ads

Also suspect the change to domed pins may have been due to aluminum not holding flush pins as well as steel does. But these suspicions are pure speculation on my part. Or that using flush steel pins with Tufram coated aluminum would stand out too much visually? Or that the pins would damage the coa...

Re: Not A Clue In What I Have... Using It For Charity...

It's also the knife Hannibal Lechter used. His was serrated. The knife depicted in the movie "Hannibal" is a plain edged Harpy. Now, in the book, IIRC, it was a civilian which I believe was serrated. If there is a serrated model in the movie, I can't think of when it would be shown. The C...

The all SS version is nice, but I always really liked the brass lined ones even more. The look was great, but they often had a stiffer action.

Re: Letting a Grail Knife Go. Am I a Collector or a User?

Its like the old saying. "I collect knives and my knives collect dust". Keep telling myself I am going to let go a hundred or so knives. Then it just seems like a Big hassle, and I put it off. LOL LOL I let a few go here and there, but need to get serious one of these days. +1, except the...

Re: AUS-8 vs. AUS 8A

I specifically remembered reading that thread all those years ago and being surprised. It didn't seem like the kind of mistake that would make it past the production sample phase to me. I guess when they are so excited to be bringing all the new designs and technology to market the tiny text can som...
