As part of my interest in understanding powder metallurgy, I sent an email to Ronald Long at Carpenter Technology Corporation. He is the Commercial Manager of the Knife Blade Products division. He has graciously allowed me to share it with the forum. Here is a portion of our correspondence. [INDENT]...

Ankerson: What is the difference between 2nd and 3rd generation Powder Steel? Hey Sal; It would be interesting to have a Mule in both M390 and CTS 204P to see how Bohler and Carpenter tweaked their alloys, i.e. 2nd versus 3rd generation if you will. It would also be informative to see the complete s...

As the M390 is virtually identical to Carpenter CTS-204P are there any plans to use it in a future Mule or ClipIt?

IMO, I believe that any modification in this regard will weaken the structural and locking integrity of the Military Model, one if not the strongest linerlocks made. Removing the backspacer or adding barrel spacers will allow the handle to twist, flex, and shift under extreme force which is what the...

Any idea how much it would cost to have a new plastic injection mold made. I've heard figures of $10,000 - $40,000. Then consider the cost of material (FRN), manufacturing time (labor), transportation costs to deliver the new base to Golden, etc. How many specialty bases would Spyderco have to sell ...

Paul, I find your logic a little flawed IMHO. You are buying, using, and generally positively commenting on some of the finest (and relatively expensive) knives in the world and yet are too cheap to buy equivalent accessories. Why not just buy and use these knives ( http://www.smkw.com/webapp/eComme...

DragonFly 2? As I recall, the FRN handle was changed to include a pinkie rest as part of the one-piece molded clip several years after the original was born. I guess that would make the current FRN model a DragonFly 1.5 ;) As to your survey question, I would prefer to see a two-piece FRN molded hand...

I do not believe that your observation, "Tee-Hee," that 'the type "Spyderco AUS-8" and the Bob Lum logo are offset and misplaced,' is an actual mistake. It is more of an optical illusion or matter of perspective as the knives appear to have been digitally redrawn (enhanced) from ...
