would there be a major improvement on using the ultrafine ceramic stone that spyderco offers and what main purpose would the diamond rod offer vs just the regular rods? The ultrafines do put a finer polish on the edge, for sure. Whether you need that much, I couldn't say. If your purpose is to get ...

Sharpmaker saves the (Turkey) Day!

Preparing today's mashed potatoes, my wrist was starting to ache from pushing a dull peeler through the first three potatoes. Naturally, it was time to test whether those Sharpmaker rods could actually put a better edge on the sucker. It was hard to get the triangle's corner through the back of the ...

When I got my first G-10 knife, I thought I'd never buy anything else. It's great stuff -- stiff, grippy, and light. Then, I got a really good deal on a ZDP Delica, so I had to go with an FRN handle. I have to say, although there are manufacturers whose FRN I find to be "cheap plastic," I ...

If you're using the Mule primarily for KP, you ought to grind off the guard. With the guard there, you can only get 40-50% of the blade to contact your cutting board. Where's the fun in that?

truthfully, i have quite a bit of self-control... in the form of my wife. i've just ordered my first one, and she's telling me no more till 2012. :p You should tell her that the Mayans said that's the End Times, and time is too short for these sorts of arbitrary limits. You can swap: she gets some ...

I've carried a wharncliffe Urban for the last several months. For the significant majority of the tasks that actually arise for an EDC knife (slicing string, opening mail, cutting up boxes), I think the wharncliffe is superior. However, for a few tasks, the wharncliffe is badly suited. In particular...

I spent a while this morning re-examining this knife. Nice, solid, plain, nothing too crazy, except for that steel.

It's like the guys at Volkswagen offering the engine from a Lamborghini as an affordable upgrade for your Jetta.

I can't knock 8Cr13MoV, or any other CrMoV (wasn't that a famous rapper?) for that matter. If Spyderco is looking at these as legit kitchen steels, they're probably really good. I haven't used either. But from the first day I worked with VG-10, I thought "this is the ultimate kitchen steel.&quo...

I finally got my Delica Z (that's what I'm gonna call it, like it's a Datsun from way back) last night. It was nice, straight out the box. Naturally, then, I spent this morning changing it. I put a 10 degree back bevel on each side. This took a long time, and made me wish for a while that I had been...

Especially when a steel like ZDP can stay strong in an FFG format like virtually none other. I think the decision has to boil down to ZDP putting up such a fight against the grinding factory.
