Testing
This testing methodology borders on destructive testing. I am completely uninterested in destructive testing if it is not done in a controlled manner. There are far too many variables in this testing (differences in forces applied, since a human, rather than a machine is applying the forces, sample ...

Still going?
Good grief, this thread is still going? It seems to have two separate themes, now, with one being the original thread and the other being "this is my preferred methodology to fight with a knife." I will not comment on a lot of the "methodology" that I have seen posted here, excep...

Cold Steel Knives
I expect Sal or Kristi will be along in this thread soon and ask for "shiny footprints." In any case, I am going to repeat a few things that I have said before on this forum and say a few things that are probably not going to be very popular here (like that is a first :D ). First of all, L...

Ring Guard Bowie
From your description, I assume you meant something along the lines of this:

Of course, if you have a Bowie that looks like the above, I am very jealous :D .

Knife
What you are describing is a knife with what is called a "ring guard." I have seen them on Bowies and on a couple of double edged weapons. Custom makers should be able to help you with a fighter, if you wish. I do not know of any high quality production version being made currently, though...

Hello KaliGMan, I am hoping that you don't mind answering some questions that I have about your videos. Perhaps they are ignorant, but I have been wondering anyways. I understand that with typical FMA, most all empty-handed strikes can be easily mimicked with a knife. With these quick, whip-like sp...

I doubt you have to compromise on this cutting ability; perhaps a bit on the piercing due to a thicker blade being needed. I've used my Endura as a light pry-bar, screw driver, and all sorts of non-knife tasks. That's why I love Spyderco, their knives are tough! an EDC knife needs to be versatile. ...
Interesting
Hi Jon, Thanks for the video. I have a difficult time following the movements as there are so many done so quickly. The sparing might be too fast to follow at half speed. My request is to follow each sparing sequence with 1/3 speed replay so I can actually follow the flow. Thank you for your effort...
New video
When I posted a video about developing power in close range striking ( http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43249 ), I mentioned in the thread that I had a video showing some close range work at speed. Below is a link to the Albo Kali Silat website where the video, which focuses on deflec...

Pakal Edge In
Well, I'm not Mike Janich, but I did once stay at a Holiday Inn Express...or was it the Hilton in Bucharest? :p . For what it is worth, I am not a fan of pakal edge in tactics as a primary methodology. I use and teach this style of grip, among others, simply because it is useful in certain situation...

Bram Frank and Spyderco had a disagreement which I am not going to get into here. Bram, who had the patent on the "kinetic opening ramp," went on to have other, similar, designs produced (I have some of those as well). There are various makers out there who can fix you up with a kydex shea...

Trainers
In Spyderco production, bright red is for trainers. Over at Emerson, it is bright blue for trainers. "Red Guns," deactivated firearms with no firing pins and lead-filled barrels that were painted red, or, later on, plastic and/or hard rubber facsimile guns in the red color, have been used ...

Lava Modifications
Agreed. I know this is sort of heresy, but has anyone modded the blade - gt it reprofiled? And does anyone do scale replacement? How would you replace SS handles anyway? http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31604 As for the blade, it needed no modification to be quite a good little defen...

Chinook and Military
I think that you will find that either knife works fairly well. It will come down to your personal preferences, how you grip a knife, your cutting methodology, and the way you perceive the blade to meld with your hand. Objectively, the Military is lighter and thus perhaps somewhat easier to carry th...

The video is too long for a standard YouTube account upload. I will have to find a logical place to split it, then load it as two parts. This means going back to my video software and doing a bit of work. I have a few other things going on right now, so it will take a couple of days.

Hi KaliGMan, Is there any way you can put the video on the Tube? I'd like to take a look at it. I really enjoyed the Albo Kali Silat low level techniques because it was a wonderful lesson in confined power generation via synchronized muscle contraction for explosive speed. It also demonstrated that...

Hi Doc, I understand your comments. You are quite correct on spiral movement "developing energy" by sometimes using most of the skeletal structure. Of course, not everything I am doing in this video is "spiral energy." Even though there is some spiral motion in the "whip,&qu...
