Re: Mule Team 20 (CTS B70P), my first Mule
About the steel and sharpening. I haven't used the mule for real work yet but I did cut up some vinyl siding and one small cardboard box. When I started I had the knife slicing phone book paper very well. It had a very crisp, sharp edge. I don't know how damaging vinyl siding is to a knife edge but ...

Re: Mule Team 20 (CTS B70P), my first Mule
Does anyone know someone who makes kydex sheaths? I'm pursuing a couple of things but other recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Mule Team 20 (CTS B70P), my first Mule
The handle being finished I used the knife for some light duty this morning. It came almost as sharp as the SHARPEST Spyderco I've gotten out of the box. It was VERY sharp. Much sharper than a knife really needs to be to perform well. Even though it was ready for use I wanted to smooth the bevel and...

Re: Mule Team 20 (CTS B70P), my first Mule
Thanks guys. Here are pictures of the knife after 2 coats of Polyurethane. Right now I'm going to make a temporary sheath. I need a kydex neck sheath for it. I won't use it until tomorrow afternoon or later. I want to make sure the polyurethane is completely dry. I'm afraid if I apply a lot of press...

Re: Mid knife crisis !
I like your play on words. "Mid knife crisis" compared to "mid-life crisis". It brings to mind why knives are better than girls. Our knives are always there ready to go with us from one day to the next. They never complain when another knife is picked. Girls usually don't put up ...

Re: Carter Cutlery knife
What exactly does that mean? I been hearing that every time Murray Carter is talked about. It means he trained from someone who trained from someone in a continuous line for 17 generations. Murray Carter is a "Yoshimoto" 17th generation master. I wonder how many other people fill the roll...

Re: Carter Cutlery knife
I don't know what I would have found if I hadn't wanted to carry it the next day. If it had stayed in the sheath for a few days I don't know what I would have found. The interesting thing about plain carbon and very low alloy steels is that while they take surface rust very readily they don't have ...

Re: Carter Cutlery knife
Update on the Carter neck knives. I'm loving everything about these knives regarding an EDC fixed blade. But I tell you, you gotta watch the white steel when it comes to rust. One day I used it and got it wet while working and forgot to clean it that night. The next morning I looked at it and was ve...

Re: Mule Team 20 (CTS B70P), my first Mule
Finally got back to work on my mule. Shaped the handle and got one coat of polyurethane on it. I'll sand it and apply second coat tonight I think. Here it is so far. http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy288/jackknifeh/Spyderco%20Mule%2020%20CTS%20B70P/Mule%201st%20coat%201_zpsc5rtdi57.jpg http://i80...

No recent work on the knife. I've been distracted by other stuff but it sits on my bench asking what's the hold up. :)dubya3 wrote:Any progress lately? I'm doing Ebony and Burl Maple on mine with brass hardware and possibly some maroon liners to sandwich between the scales and tang.

Re: Dremel user's conversations
Hey guys. I just bought a chainsaw. Poulan 18". I've been wanting one for MANY years but never got one. The other day an old, dead decaying, so old it should be petrified by now tree fell over. Trunk was about 10" in diameter. I got the saw and in about 1.5 minutes I had the old rotten, re...

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
Hi jackknifeh, that's some nice work! Do the Shapton stones really remove stock that fast, or are you just amazingly patient? I go from a 150 Naniwa to 1k "red brick", 2k "green brick" then a Rika 5k, and finish with either a strop loaded with yellow stone, or a Japan woodworker...

Re: Mule Team 20 (CTS B70P), my first Mule
Hey jack, beautiful work! I wish I was as daring as you and attempted some nice scales for my MULE 18, luckily my uncle is a custom woodworker so I might see if I can pay him to make a set. Any updates on your knife? Also, where did you find the pins? The one knife builder shop I know of is out of ...

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
The edge on that Stretch looks fantastic! What stone progression did you use to get there? I think I'll leave my SB Stretch close to stock, I already lowered the total included angle of the edge, but didn't work the thinner bevel far up the blade, so it cuts nicely, but doesn't look all that differ...

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
Just for a bit of fun I am going to do this to a cheap kitchen knife. We have plenty of those. :) Jack Typical low hardness stainless steel kitchen knife blades will likely just wind up with a bend in the edge, most cheapie kitchen knives also have too thick of an edge grind for that test to work. ...

Still today. :) I removed the clamps and sanded the sides flat. Now I will begin shaping the handle and finishing it. Here's a couple of pictures. Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
Very carefully, I bent it back toward the other way when open with my bare hands until the centering was better. I've since tried this with some VG10 folders and could not get them to budge so at least in my experience it seems that the clad knives are just that much softer. You really shouldn't be...

Re: I'm Thinking Stretch in Super Blue - Good Choice??
Oops. I don't remember how to delete this post. I duplicated it or quoted myself or something. JackKnifeH, that's exactly what I was trying to explain. That was the first backlock knife I've taken apart and the first FRN Spydie as well. It's 100% my fault for ruining the backspacer stud but I reall...
