There's a few different threads discussing the Stop Lock, including one that has links to the patent illustrations.

It's pretty different from other knife locks, and I'd say it reminds me of how one might make a lockback without a bar on the back.

It seems like having a hole toward the spine would allow some amount (however slight) of "give" that would, in the vast majority of use cases, result in LESS blade breakage.

My preference would be for it to be as close as possible to a scaled up version of the original. However, I imagine that, just like there are things which cannot simply be scaled down, there are probably be things that just can't simply be scaled up. So I suspect there might be some changes needed ...

So, I'm taking a closer look at the photo of the Chaparral on the first page, and I'm wondering: is the blade really a lot shorter than the handle, or is that an optical illusion?

I don't have any impression that VG-10 scratches unusually easily. I think it may SHOW scratches more than some other steels.

I don't know much about the innards of knives, but won't a knife that's shaped like the Sage, with bolsters, be really heavy? And balanced toward the front of the knife, to boot?
