I for the life of me can't see any reason to harden these high performance steels 30V, D2, VG-10 etc. higher then 60RC. But I could be wrong as wrong could be. It doesn't seem to make what little gain there is in toughness, worth the extra effort it will take to restore the edge.

(In these modern high quality steels the standard Spyderco 30-40 degree may be too large to really bring out the differences between something as closely matched as S30V and VG-10. My two cents.) That's facinateing, I never thought of that, and with Joe's knowledge of metalurgy probably true!

In my own test they are indeed! For me VG-10 held it's edge ever so slightly longer, while 30V was ever so slightly easier to bring the edge back. In my test D2 hands down holds it's edge longer then either VG-10 or 30V! The down side is D2 requires 1/3 as much honeing to get the edge back! RKBA!

They're checked everytime they are carried, and when they are in need of a cleaning or lube I do it. I just recently lubed our BM 735 for the first time since it's initial lubeing when I first got it, 10 months earlier. That's about average for an EDC. RKBA!
