Re: New 20CV Para 2!!!

I am not positive but it sounds like Bohler may have the more refined processing of the three with possible finer grain. In the end heat treatment and edge geometry will make a bigger difference than steel differences though. I think Carpenter has the finest grain. But yes, heat treat and geometry ...

Re: Ranking the Steel Ranking Articles

Larrin, you have probably seen these, but - there are a couple of rankings made by the steel manufacturers, though perhaps a bit dated. This one is the most comprehensive. Click on Knife Steel Basics here, and scroll to page 4. http://www.crucible.com/Products.aspx?c=25 Others give partial rankings,...

Re: Guide to the Best Knife Steel

Good as a general guide, though not necessarily strictly accurate. Many steels are listed with better corrosion resistance than S110V, but that is not true.

Re: Maxamet and the future

My thoughts goes in the same direction with Rex 45 - However a cutting test by M.C. showed that Rex 45 cut 1122 inches of cardboard and a Maxamet 2121 inches  Then again almost double the carbids and 4-5 Rc higher steel. Gor my knives today and the Manix 2 is great design 84 gr :D The two test...

Michael Christy posted his experience with Rex 45 and it's quite impressive. He notes a 17% longevity increase compared to HAP40 on his cardboard cutting test.
Actually 21% increase over Hap40.

we never saw a Native5 in this configuration which I was hoping for. I wonder if we will see a Para3.
Either or both would be great.

Re: I s’pose it’s what you get used to.

I guess it really is what you are used to. Any more and my most common carry is a small CRK Inkosi and a Native LW S110V. Sometimes I will carry a large Inkosi or my only Military (jade M4). But I am used to a shorter blade, and I have caught myself (painfully) with the tip of the Military when I wa...

Re: Burned Edges....

It is very easy to form a burr with power equipment. If the burr is only straightened rather than removed by the final sharpening steps you are left with a weakened edge. I suspect this contributes more to observed issues with factory edges than does overheating, though I don't know how often either...

Plus the Rex 45 is run harder than the Hap40 was, maybe 3 points harder.

Re: Burnt Orange Rex 45 para 3

What's interesting is the GP knives in stock email notification was almost instantaneous. ..which worked for me cause I was on my phone. Similar to knivesplus for the Rex PM2 in that I got a "live" email in stock . Some retailers it seems use this feature responsibly. ..other not so much....

Re: First ever grail knife has been converted to MY knife

My wife gave me a knife, and I have been able to maintain that I have never spent as much on a knife as she has. Of course it was a Ray Laconico custom folder, and she doesn't know how many or how close to that price I have bought, but I can still say it.

Native LW CTS204P green FRN, please.
That would be my first choice too.
I vote for this as well. :D

Id buy this too. The Native LW is my favorite model so any new steel is pretty much a must buy for me.
Add me to this list.

Re: Burnt Orange Rex 45

Look at Crucible's data sheets. They show M4 at 65 is noticeably tougher than Rex 45 at 67, and also a little more wear resistant. Spyderco doesn't run M4 at 65 (as far as I know, except an early run of Gayle Bradleys), so the wear resistance is probably pretty close. An older one: https://www.carte...

Re: Best Sharpening Resources?

Michael's videos are very impressive, but I get plenty sharp edges without going to the great lengths he does. I do not go for such refinement so that makes a difference. In fact, most of the time I only use one stone - EF DMT - unless the edge is pretty dull or needs restoration. Having said that, ...

Re: Maximizing Edge Retention – What CATRA Reveals about the Optimum Edge

Buck's testing many years ago proved this - 420HC lasted longer than 440C and BG-42 when it had a lower edge angle. They then changed the angle of their knives and called it Edge 2000.

Re: Maximizing Edge Retention – What CATRA Reveals about the Optimum Edge

It is no surprise that edge angle is by far the most important factor. Doesn't CATRA actually measure force to cut (a given force cuts a measured number of cards cut)? Then actual apex sharpness is a secondary contributing factor, as seen by the actual apex thickness on the micrographs. Perhaps bett...

And it looks like a brown Para 3 S35VN is coming out soon.

The brown looks better in person than in the pictures on the dealer sites.

Just went to preorder through Knifecenter at $188.00 showing discontinued / out of stock now. I thought this was around $140-50 originally?

That was the Military you ordered. The PM2 and Para 3 are in the range you thought or less.
