Re: The tip up/ tip down debate continues

So much easier with tip up, because the grip I use to draw the knife has my hand in perfect position to open it. That extra step gets old fast. Part of the knife sticks out of your pocket- grab that part between thumb and first finger and pull it out. Your thumb will be right next to the opening ho...

Now scale making is a skill I'd love to have. I really want good functional, lightweight set of wooden one scales for my Mules. They don't have to be pretty or anything, and actually, it is probably better if they aren't.
It's not that hard to do- you should try it.

If you want an edge that looks like the factory edge, then do not sharpen the knife. Buyers seem to be suspicious of buying a knife that has been sharpened. I can only guess that they are concerned that the angles are messed up or maybe the heat treat was harmed by machine sharpening. So it is bett...

Re: The tip up/ tip down debate continues

I carried a Leatherman Skeletool for a couple of years, and that was tip down. I never though twice about it. But when I got into pocketknives, they were mostly tip down, and I got used to that and like it better, I think. But it's all in what you are used to. The true weirdos are the people who go...

Re: Spyderco Seconds Sale Scores

I've been thinking about this a little bit. There is tremendous demand because Spyderco is famous worldwide, and a lot of scammers have recognized that getting in on in-demand Spyderco products can earn them some quick profit. I wonder how many of the seconds items have already made it to ebay. So w...

I might as well put in the average 3-4 hours required for a successful check out as overtime at work and pay full price.
I realized that and didn't even worry about trying today. I had to go to my office and work so it was easier for me to just ignore it.

Re: What can I expect at the online 2nds Sale and how do I prepare?

You'll see it on the TV news tomorrow night- "Internet down throughout western hemisphere, airports closed, stock market shut down, .... ". It will be a meltdown of monumental proportions. Seriously though, it is hard to predict. I was not able to buy anything during the previous online sa...

Re: The tip up/ tip down debate continues

I have a preference but I go both ways. I have to because there are knife designs I like that are tip up and others that are tip down. I stuck to my preferences very closely for awhile then gave in when I realized that I was missing out on some great designs. Most people have their preferences too, ...

Re: Knife trends you just don't understand?

I have mixed feelings about most of the trends mentioned, if people like them then they can buy them, I don't have to. The trend that I don't understand is hammered flats on fixed blade knives. Does someone want us to believe that they hand forged the blade and then ground the bevel into it? I was b...

Re: Sharpening & Calculating Ideal Bevel Height (trigometry!)

Consider what the blade looks like before the edge is put on it. A flat ground blade will taper from the spine to the edge and will be thinnest close to the choil. At the tip it would be the same thickness as the rest of the spine. This won't work so the blade gets moved around a bit during grinding...

Re: S110V & ZDP-189: Not Down & Out IMO

I like S110v and I'm carrying that in my Manix2 LW right now. I normally think in terms of carbon steels such as M4 or even K390, thinking I'm getting good edgeholding and better toughness although in reality the numbers don't say there is that much difference. We talk about steels such as Maxamet a...

Re: Switching Manix 2 LW FRN Scales to G10….Straightforward?

The short answer is no. The FRCP version has different internal parts including liners. Remove the LW scales and you only have a blade and a couple of small parts left. I thought people used to swap blades between FRCP and G10 versions but more recently I've read that the blades aren't compatible so...

Re: How have your preferences changed over the years?

Mostly my preferences have evolved with the evolution of the knife market. The only somewhat radical change I've made was to prefer blades that are more pointed. I had a Buck Prince or something else from that line that had a relatively blunt tip. Searching the internet for photos what I find now al...

Re: revieving the pressure of pocket clips...?

The spring pressure of the chromed pocket clip of my stainless steel (Seki) Spyderco Worker is in a word, extreme. I haven't had a problem with a lot of clip pressure but I'll suggest if you want to bend the clip out a little bit you need to go carefully and a little bit at a time. A thin piece of ...

Re: A visual guide to Edge geometry vs Blade geometry

I've always known that thin stock works better with rigid materials. As much as I liked cutting up boxes with my old Manix 2 I know that the standard boxcutter works better. Also something as simple as slicing an apple shows the problems with thick stock. But OTOH I've read the threads about "t...

Re: Best Spyderco for Backpacking

• If you happen to suggest a salt knife, why? Do you typically get your knives wet during backpacking, have you had rust problems? I'm asking because I've not had backcountry rust issues. • Tell me where you would carry the knife. (Front pockets are difficult with a pack.) • Would you ask your back...
