Sharpening ZDP

Hello, I've had a Michael Walker w/ZDP blade for about a month now. I also have an Edge Pro sharpener which I bought a couple of months ago. I've had a tough time getting an edge on the blade that satisfied me. This after noon I finally got a great edge on the blade using the Edge Pro. I think my pr...

testing procedure

Nozh2002, How are the tests you did on the ZDP-189 blade performed. Do you need special tools/equipment? I've tried to test edge retention by getting a real good edge on a knife then cut things like cardboard, whittle wood, etc. and comparing it to other knives like this; How easily does a knife cut...

Serrated edge sharpening method

Hello, I read a lot of the post about this but not all so I apologize if I repeat someone. One method to think about is only sharpen the flat side of the blade. Make sure your sharpener hits the points and all the way to the deepest part of the serrations (very very low angle). This will of course c...

Desired results not achieved

In my last post I said I was lowering the angle on a ZDP-189 blade to 18 degrees. Even after I got the edge down to where I was creating a burr on each side I couldn't finish the edge and have it very sharp. I contacted the maker of the Edge Pro sharpener and he said getting razor sharp edges at low...

Looking for help with ZDP

I got a Spyderco Michael Walker a couple of weeks ago that has ZDP-189 steel used for the blade. According to what I’ve read it has a Rc hardness of 64 – 66. That is harder than anything I’ve ever tried to sharpen. When I got it, it had a razor sharp edge on it. I used it a lot and even did a lot of...

My gift

I would ask for a Caly3. I would like to see the ZDP-189 laminated with the 420/j2 on each side. This type of blade should have great edge retention because of the ZDP in the center but the softer metal on the sides allows for a little play making it "tougher" when put to hard use. Japanes...

Lower edge angle on ZDP-189

I got a Michael Walker knife with a ZDP blade a couple of weeks ago. I've used it a lot, even when not necessary just to see about edge retention. Whenever the edge would loose the razor sharpness I'd touch it up and have it like brand new again with very little effort or time. This has been suggest...

Dayliu, You don't need to take your knife apart. The oil will get in all areas by working the blade back and forth several times. Check out Tuf-Glide at Sentrysolutions.com as well as their other products. Their Tuf-cloth works with the Tuf-Glide for applying to metal surfaces. About taking apart a ...

Cleaning and lubrication

Since the concern about cleaning the pivot with water is corrosion I think preventative lubrication and the different types of lubricant should be mentioned. A couple of years ago I was introduced to Sentry Solutions products, one of which is Tuf-Glide and the Tuf-Cloth as someone else mentioned in ...

ONE THING EVERYONE SHOULD BE ON THE SAME PAGE ABOUT: When speaking of the edge angle and stating 20 degrees; does that mean 20 degrees on each side for a total angle of 40 degrees at the edge? Or does it mean 10 degrees on each side for an edge of 20 degrees at the edge? When I say 20 degrees I mean...

Perfect start

Hello, Using a marker on the edge is very useful as a sharpening technique. I've been sharpening my own knives all my life and only in the past couple of years known about the marker. Here are a couple of things that may interest some people about sharpening; 1. Different types of edges, serrated vs...

Great idea

A collection of knowledge about sharpening would be nothing short of great. I have never used Spyderco sharpening tools but given their dedication to the quality of their knives I'm confident their attention to perfection would be just as dedicated in their sharpening products.

Stronger steel = smaller angle possible

Hello, The smaller the angle on the edge will of course cut better. When the steel is harder like the ZDP (I have a Michael Walker) the angle can be lowered to cut better without a lot of risk to damaging or chipping the edge. I sharpen this knife to 18 degrees (per side to equal 36 degrees total an...
