Re: Just ordered some Nano Oil *cough snake oil cough*

Mineral oil doesn't last for me. I've tried to move away from lube unless needed. I generally don't need a free swinging blade. Some knives seem to do fine with no lube. Reel oil is cheap and works well. KPL is good. Based a couple of comments I'll try reel grease in knives that need a tighter pivot...

Re: How can we get more women interested in Spyderco knives?

As a woman, I can add a couple quick thoughts and this, and also on why I love spyderco knives over all others (i.e. strengths that spyderco can play on): 1) I prefer lots of small to medium-sized options with scales that aren't so thick and tall that I can't fit my hands around them with a good st...

Re: Spydies you consider selling or passing on one day

Have sold many. I'm a "try it and move on" kind of guy if I'm not going to carry it. Definitely not a collector. I still have too many and will sell some. I have a bunch of Mules. They're nice but can't use more than 1 or 2. LC200N Mule is my fishing knife and it's excellent for that purpo...

Re: Why all the Manix love?

Funny too about the hollow grind on the 4V -- I have always thought hollow grind was great and underappreciated and was looking forward to it, but on that Manix it always seemed unfortunate. I missed the Fradon Locks exclusive 4V with a hollow grind. It has to be a great cutting tool. I didn't have...

Re: Getting a Native 5 - Which Steel?

How do you plan to use it and how do you sharpen your knives? If you don't have the ability to sharpen Maxamet easily you're looking at some frustration when it gets dull. Same with S110V to a lesser extent. I would focus on the knife ergos that suit you first and then consider the steel after that....

Re: Polished or Toothy finishes

I was under the impression that knives high in carbides, you leave coarse. If you polish them to an extremely high finish you may have carbide tear out. Does that sound right? No, that's a myth, another one of those urban legends that somehow just won't die. It just doesn't exist. Some that use dia...

Re: Spyderco's 4v

I did rope cut testing with a 4V Mule and got close to K390 Mule results with it. I need to do a more controlled side-by-side comparison. Cedric & Ada got 600 cuts with 4V and 940 cuts with K390. But that was Para 3 vs. Mule and 18 degrees vs. 17 degrees. You'd expect lower cuts or 18 degrees. N...

Re: HRC Database

I believe the BB spreadsheet is exclusively tests from Kurt. I could be wrong and hope they correct me if so.

The Mule numbers in the BB spreadsheet come from Kurt. I know this because they're my Mules. Have a few more to send him. If you're referring to other Mule numbers I'll take a look.

Re: HRC Database

Great thread. No question Kurt and David from BB are doing us a huge service. I'd be happy to get another spreadsheet going with all the results and some graphs. Is there value unless these can all be substantiated? Maybe I'll just fill in HRC data to the cut test list below https://docs.google.com...

Re: Blade length considerations...

I don't run into a lot of surprise or emergency tomato slicing. I could just as easily say I need to carry an 8" blade in case I need to slice a watermelon. I carry a folder for the day-to-day tasks I'm likely to see, and for any emergency tasks I may run across where a knife would be helpful. ...

Re: seat belt cutting

I would guess a hawkbill Spydie Edge would be the best for cutting a seat belt. But having a dedicated seat belt knife doesn't seem practical to me. My wife is a paramedic. She carries a 3.5" plain edge and has a lot of seat belts with it. Doesn't seem to be a problem. If I didn't keep it sharp...

In no particular order:

Chaparral
Sage 1
Para 3 Cru Wear
Native S90V
Buck Vantage S35VN with Micarta scales (started out as 20CV - steel is too soft so I swapped in an S35 blade)

I like this lock a lot, even in the un-caged version. The way the ball and spring control the closed tension and lock the blade is just the coolest design.

Re: Which steel "spoiled" you?

Hard to say. Maxamet was a real eye opener. K390 too. A fixed blade LC 200 N fishing knife is just a miraculous thing. I like all the Spydero steels I've tried.

Re: Cruwear What is the problem?

Guys, since I my steel knowledge and -experience is rather limited compared to most of yours (and that's no "humblebrag", but just a fact), and I never had a Cruwear-, but sure S30V knives (and I'm totally fine with that steel): Let's say, Cruwear and S 30V were both similarly new steels ...

Re: Serrata

Wanted to post another comment about this steel. It's odd and awesome stuff. Been using my Serrata for a while and needed to sharpen it. It would cut, but would not cleanly cut printer paper. I have a 19 degree edge with a 21 degree micro bevel. I touched up the microbevel with a 600 grit aluminum o...

Re: Which steel is closest to what is used in German Kitchen Knives??

Was anyone else laughing at Sal's initial response? Basically, the closest that Spyderco comes to using the steel from a relatively common german kitchen knife is as a liner or handle. In all seriousness, a knife used in the kitchen can be sharpened before every use, and even in the middle of each ...
