Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

This may have been asked before, but can the Native Magnacut blade be switched out and put on G10 scales or does the fact that its a LW knife prevent the use of aftermarket scales? You would need the back spacer that’s on the g10 models. The LW does not have one. Otherwise I’m not sure if the blade...

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

Just ordered the plain edge from eBay, it's a good dealer with 100% rating. They have about a dozen available. Seller is robcoknivesllc . Evidently no longer available. But it is good to see the product getting distributed after a long wait. I'm assuming it will be more available than "a dozen...

which Native 5 Salt Magnacut are you guys talking about... SE or PE? Seems SE is widely available, but I don't see any Plain Edge anywhere.

Re: Native 5 salt is Magnacut?

Only $65 over the regular retail price. So greedy… actually it is MSRP at $216. but in reality I'm not aware of any retail outlet that doesn't sell for about 30% discount, so, yeah. But I don't think of it as greed, it is simply supply and demand. If they lose future business b/c of this price on t...

Re: Waiting to buy Mules

wow, that came off like a really dismissive reply from Sal. "We'll decide what should be important to you" essentially. I'm sure he doesn't mean to come off like that... but it does. Somebody reported that Sal had said the mules aren't selling as well as they once did. Maybe telling people...

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

update. that guy in AUS keeps cutting his saisal rope and Magnacut is biting at the heels of S90V for edge retention, far ahead of M4, which is far ahead of Cruwear, all using Mules. At this point M4 is out, since I can have better toughness, and better corrosion resistance with Cruwear or Magnacut...

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

update. I don't think I will find anything size of Lil Native in any of those tougher than average steels... Cruwear, Magnacut or M4. So, I'm now back to settling for an approx 3" blade, and that gives me two current options... 1) Magnacut in Native 5 Salt PE at $152, which I'm assuming will be...

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

thanks for all the input. I've decided that for this knife, for the purposes of utility work around the house, some poking, prying, some scraping, some light chiseling ... don't need a wear resistant slicing machine. Just a very small knife that is tough. So K390 is out. Seems like some other tough ...

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

I'm pretty sure the people here who are "more skillful and knowledgeable" have never depended on just a Sharpmaker, so I'm really depending on novices who have used Sharpmaker on M4, K390, and other tool steels with 4% or higher Vanadium.

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

So I have a question about K390. On this site https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/10/19/knife-steels-rated-by-a-metallurgist-toughness-edge-retention-and-corrosion-resistance/ k390 is not found in the tables for toughness/edge retention / corrosion reistance. So I don't know how tought it is. It seems ...

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

OK, so if I'm not mistaken, Spyderco's generally ship with about a 36 degree bevel, right? I'm thinking that is a good geometry to support toughness, correct? And that to reprofile to 30 inclusive would be a mistake for a tool knife. And in fact it could be preferrable to take the 36 from the factor...

Re: Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

thanks for your replies. I live in Southern California, which is really a desert-ish climate, so humidity isn't an issue for M4. I considered Cruwear, but I'm not punching holes in metal cans or trying to chip out concrete or anything weird like that, so I thought M4 will be tough enough, and it hol...

Sharpmaker enough for M4 or K390?

Hi, long time no post. Years ago I had a Native 5 in 110v, an Endura4 in ZDP-189, and a Para2 in S30v. I had no luck trying to sharpen the ZDP-189, and could never get it to cut paper as would be expected of a good edge. I sold the Native5, and lost the other two in a move. Then I bought a 130mm a J...

I just realized this whole thread should be in the sharpening section, but it's here, so ... two of my three questions were answered... yes, strop very lightly, and 15 degrees should be fine with 12-14 degree workshop edges... The last question which wasn't answered yet is -- which spyderco rods do ...

Re: Syderco sharpmaker

Hey fellas, haven't been around for awhile but I am about to order three new kitchen knives and want to know how to use the Sharpmaker on two kinds of Japanese steel: 1) VG-10 at 60. Tojiro DP Chef and paring knives 2) Aogami Blue #2 at 62-63 in my Gihei Santoku All of my sharp maker experience has ...

I have a Sage 2 that I paid $157.00 for and that's the most expensive Spyderco I own. It cannot possibly cost that much to make a knife when you're talking about two handle scales and a blade. It I was guessing I would say somewhere in the neighborhood of $35-$40 for an average G10 VG10 knife maybe...

I could spend an hour and a half in there and not realize that any time had passed. I guess what I'm saying is, yeah it's cheaper online but is that worth losing the ability to go to a shop, chat with the employees, handle the knives to see how they feel and experience the knife before you buy it? ...
