The black micarta on the large Persian and J D Smith is my favorite scale material. I agree it adds significantly to the beauty of these knives. It also makes it much easier for me to carry and use them since the micarta does no damage to my pockets.

Those are both great! You just could not go wrong with either of them. If I were choosing between them for myself (and could have only one), I would go with #2. I do hope that the great Spyder company is flourishing in this challanging economy. My own business has been off quite a bit; so new knives for the EarthDog have not been a priority.
