Re: No love for the Lil Native?

No love. It's the everything I don't want in a knife. YMMV

Re: MAP policy change? 35%

We don't expect every one of our customers to like all of our knives. We have a lot of different kinds of customers and their tastes and pocketbooks are all different. We make knives I'm not crazy about, but some of our customers are. I understand completely. I'm pointing out that there are so many...

Re: MAP policy change? 35%

... We could not do what we do with variety, steels, models, new product, etc. without the sales. I understand. Variety is expensive. My personal take is that there's too much variety. It's overwhelming and unless you're made of money, which I'm not, most of it goes by the wayside. Some new stuff? ...

Re: MAP policy change? 35%

MAP isn't price fixing, it's public advertising fixing. Technically true. But the effect is exactly the same. Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, etc. It's my real issue with MAP. The Amazon thing is mouse nuts. You've got the numbers to say whether the positives outweigh the negatives there and...

I'm not complaining about Amazon, I'm complaining about Spyderco selling through Amazon. Whole different kettle of fish.

Re: MAP policy change? 35%

What I can't get in my head is this thing with MAP. Why is it necessary in a free market? It's purpose is to increase dealer profit margins and keep them from dropping the brand. Otherwise all sales would end up going through Amazon and a couple of other big dealers because most customers are price...

Re: MAP policy change? 35%

I want to thank software guys for creating "ignore list"... FYI it's now called "foes". I went hunting for it yesterday and couldn't find it. You motivated me again today. I figured that trips earned a "foe" designation even if it means that he won't like me anymore. P...

Re: The 30 Day "Inferior" Steel Challenge

Unless you’re referring to 1095’s lack of corrosion resistance I don’t know why anyone would consider it “inferior”. It’s a fantastic steel. There are lots of more modern carbon steels that are better in some way. 1095 is pretty much just iron and carbon. The other steels have added elements that i...

Re: Confessional

My confession is actually a confession. I didn't buy any Spydies this year. Last year was disappointing for me with a Nillakka that was really thick behind the edge and a Puukko that has a thin handle for the style. None of this years closeouts did much for me and MAP has taken all the fun out of ba...

Buck 560(titanium 110) with a BG42 blade. Still carry it. Love that knife.

Re: The 30 Day "Inferior" Steel Challenge

I've been carrying 1095 for the last couple of weeks. The steel may be inferior, but the nice thin blades are superior. I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

Re: What's you're biggest folding knife pet peeve?

Thick blades, thick behind the edge grinds, and thick tips. I don't expect any knife that folds to be truly hard-use oriented. Instead, I expect them to cut really well. I'm too often disappointed.

The transparency and openness about this is truly appreciated. I especially appreciate the mention of the interactions with Amazon... +1 to all of it. I shortened the quote for readability. I also want to comment that a brand not being available on Amazon isn't a big deal to me. I just ordered a ca...

If there is a volume discount at the wholesale level, getting rid of it might go a long way toward leveling the playing field. It might fix the whole problem. Top-down control is inefficient. Re: MAP policy change? 35%

The vast majority of b&m stores I have visited carry some form of benchmade and very little Spyderco if at all. Interesting. Maybe there's room for two distribution channels, one for the low-volume pocket jewellery and another for the high-volume working man's knives. Heck, undercut Amazon by s...

Re: MAP policy change? 35%

I cringe at the resentments on display in this thread. What an abuse of our hosts. True. Lots of frustration being vented, not always at the party to blame. One of my frustrations is seeing Spyderco go the way of Benchmade. I haven't bought a Benchmade since they started their MAP program. All the ...

Re: MAP policy change? 35%

This is just what I needed to stop senselessly buying more Spyderco knives. Production costs do not go up that much every year. True. But health insurance sure does. Mine has gone from $200/mo to $700/mo in four years for just me, and that's with with the highest possible deductible. So much for af...
