Have you tried to put the screws in the desired position without the clip? All three holes?

If they don't grab without the clip, then the liner is stirpped. That would be unfortunate.

Concerning the tip thing. I have never snapped the tip off on any of my Spyderco knives. And I am not shy about sticking a knife into wood, forced or thrown.
