Much is personal preference. I like S90v & M4 over ZDP 189. Maybe its just me......... ;) I am talking only about how fast it get dull when cut 1/2" manila rope. I have very good knife, perfectly designed and well crafted, it happen to have ZDP189 blade and even it is only on 5th place, I ...

Then your point is that the steel formulation is not important but it's all in how its heat treated? Of course, You may see this all over results - 1095 by Jody Muller 3rd place. Jody Muller member of ABS and did zone differential heat treatment with hamon etc... Othe was GEC also shows good result...

Scottie3000 wrote:But isn't D2 steel both 1st and something like 30th in your tests? How can that be?
In deed how? How it is possible that two different manufacturers one with generic and other one with his own in house 30 years old special heat treatment has different result with very same steel?

Thanks, Vassili.

In short - CPM M4 is best Crucible steel so far but it is still behind ZDP189, and it is not stainless. Lately it got quite a bit of marketing about 6 months ago, but I guess now manufacturers starts looking for alternatives to Crucible and got pretty good findings - like Carpenter Steel with really...

Vassili, I have read some of your posts and you seem to be knowledgeable so what specific benefits do bronze washers provide versus other materials? Am I correct in assuming that if the washers (any material) were to wear out spyderco would replace them? Teflon will work as well, I am not sure will...

Yes, real life situation may be different. But it does not mean that there is no any correlation between test results and real life. Unfortunately at least for me my real life "experience" as knife collector and forums member was greatly influenced by commonly accepted knowledge. Before I ...

Nothing is impossible from the lab to the field. I would agree that there is more literature to back the steels than a single test. I trust the lab over the field. Even Cliff Stamp would prob give a head nod to Catra in edge testing of steel stock. Less human interaction the better for that, IMHO. ...

DMT D8XX performance is close to grinder, but without overheating troubles. You use same moves as when sharpening and for diamonds it does not matter is it ZDP189 or VG10 or anything. I think it will be easiest way. It cost about $90, but I would recommend it to have for anybody anyway. It is like p...

Sal, is it possible to provide any detail on those test results? What does those number mean (I assume number of cuts). But what was initial sharpness, what was final sharpness, what was media and was it cut on the some wooden base - etc... I am pretty confident with CPM S90V performing less then ZD...
