Re: Community Sharpening Journal

I’ll be interested to hear how that edge works for you. I’ve noticed some very experienced deer hunters (some of whom are butchers and slaughtermen by trade) often use a similar technique with their boning and skinning knives, when breaking a carcass down into cuts. They usually just work with a wor...

Re: K390 fans rejoice!

Yes!!! That’s almost gonna be too much goodness to handle! Highlights for me will be - Stretch 2 Dragonfly Delica Wharncliffe I wonder if Moki will come to the party with the Caly and Caly 3.5? They don’t seem to be too fond of hard monosteel blades. They did the Superblue and HAP40 sprint steel run...

Re: What would folding pocket knives look like if Sal never started Spyderco?

If I recall right Spyderco tend to reference Kit Carson when they talk about their flipper design, but I’m not sure if they’re talking about the invention of that opening feature, or a particular type of flipper tab. (Don’t really know anything about that type of design, as I’ve never owned a flippe...

Re: Any geology type folks here?

Thanks Joe, I was lucky to have a similar childhood in the Australian bush, a similar distance away from a large city, but a world away in terms of lifestyle. It must be a wistful feeling looking at that barn now, with all those memories attached to it. I had a look around that area on Streetview. C...

Re: Who wants a Delica Wharncliffe with ZDP189 and BRG?

I think Cruwear would also be an excellent option with its relatively high toughness - I’m thinking of that thin, pointy tip. I should mention that I did snap off about 1-2mm of the fine tip on my ZDP189 Dragonfly once, when I accidentally brushed it off a steel bench and it fell tip first onto the ...

Re: Who wants a Delica Wharncliffe with ZDP189 and BRG?

Yeah, that occasional bluish misty patina is very cool. ZDP189 doesn’t get a great deal of fanfare, although it has quite a few dedicated users here whenever it’s discussed. Thinking it over, since this subject came up, it’s probably my favourite of the PM stainless steels. All steels are a learning...

Re: Hap40 vs zdp189 vs k390

They’re all excellent steels in my experience. In fact my main ‘work knives’ are in those three steels. HAP40 will give you a bit more toughness and sharpenability, though K390 has been fine in both those regards too, for me. I’d try ZDP189 if you haven’t had a knife in that steel, as it gives the a...

Re: Delica or Endura ZDP-189?

Maybe Sal and Eric will read this and hook us up. Yeah hopefully - these Wharny style blades you campaigned for seem to have been really popular. HAP40 Wharnie is my favorite Delica, but I'd rather have it in ZDP. :) The Seki HAP40 seems to behave like an ‘improved’ simple carbon steel to me...

Re: Crazy deals @ Sierra and other places

Can't go wrong with that one! Mine is MIA, got back from Indiana and it became lost. I'm sure the stinker is around her somewhere(I had it when I got back), I just haven't figured out where! I bought the Tighe Stick from New Graham. I reallly liked it, but when it arrived it had a CC number on it.....

I'm enjoying your reminiscences Mr Mastiff. Those are some interesting links on Whiskey Island and the Hulett Unloaders. Looks like nice country where your family farm was. JD, that's interesting about Antarctica and meteorites. It's an amazing feeling camping in the Australian desert at night, far ...

Re: Crazy deals @ Sierra and other places

I've always had great service from New Graham, they're my favourite US knife retailer. I've been sorely tempted by the 52100 CE PM2. Also that Elmax Pingo.

Ended up getting the Caribbean though, which wasn't on sale.

I really wish there was a Delica wharnie ZDP 189. That’s what I’d suggest then.
That'd be a beast of a cutter. The HAP40 Wharncliffe Delica is one of my all time favourites for warehouse type work.

Re: What would folding pocket knives look like if Sal never started Spyderco?

That's pretty cool! The brass is nice too, although I reckon it might tarnish kinda readily Yeah Jon, they're a cool testament to human inventiveness. Those brass scales can patina up pretty nice. I generally prefer steel liners and pins on traditional knives, as I don't like that ugly green verdig...

Not enough folk down this end, I guess? OZ would be a better bet...maybe some day? Yeah, Sal mentioned a while ago on Oz Bladeforums, that the distributors down here are always asking for an Aussie meet. Maybe come down here in our summer and get out of a cold US winter? Depending on their plans wi...

Re: Spyderco multi-tool?

The Standard Clipitool is a move in a good direction. When I use my Swiss Army Knife there are a few things I always reach for. #1. Mini Pliers = Use this allot. #2. Phillips Head Screw Driver sticking out the edge of the knife not the back side. #3. Scissors #4. Can and bottle opener to lesser ext...

Great post Reject, thanks for taking the time to share some of your amazing collection with us. That Maddox is pretty interesting. I'm going to have to research that one a bit more. It looks a bit like a leatherworking tool, or a mini Ulu. I love those Hossoms, they look like they'd be great outdoor...

Re: is it possible to dye or remove dye from FRN scales

Regular RIT works for FRN. The instructions say to add salt for natural fabrics and vinegar for nylon and other synthetics. 55 minutes in heated RIT Blue Denim bath dyed my yellow Salt 2 an almost black. 30-60 minutes should get a shade of blue/green to midnight blue. I think the instructions say t...
