Sorry for the confusion. What I was trying to get across, and failing, was edge in won't get me where I want to go, which is why I don't practice it. I did experiment with it, and found it lacking -- for me. People need to do what works for them. I put in time with Mr. Janich, so I admit to sharing...

The problem with edge in, reverse grip (pikal) is that it is hard to cut an attacker's arm when he strikes. That's because the back of your blade is toward his wrist. Right hand against right hand, you might be able to hook over his wrist, but that gets you the back of his arm, not the inside of hi...

Thanks Michael, very thoughtful. A couple of comments -- One thought that occurs to me is when discussing tactics and techniques is defining specifically whether we are talking about self-defense/personal protection using a knife, or using a knife to attack and injure another person. The tools are e...

The classic A-F dagger style handle works really well for every grip, though of course when you get that kind of flexibility, you sacrifice the P'kal's and Disciple's amazing lock-in for one particular grip. Still, that's where I thought I'd start if I designed my own all-grip-capable folder or fixe...

It doesn't have to be optimized for Pikal like the Disciple at all. I'm a FGEI guy, after all. I just would like to a see a reasonably-priced, easy to find IE knife that can be used reasonably well for RGEI/Pikal, FGEI point-driven methods like I use, and FGEI cutting methods like Inverted Edge Tac...

Not sure what all the fuss is about for FFG. It's about the plainest blade. People don't buy Spyderco for pretty :) Only at the last 0.3 inch to the tip is the FFG thicker at the spine. Additionally, blade thickness mid-blade and midway from spine to belly goes to the hollow grind. The thinner edge...

Like KaliGman and Stonyman...I also train in a variety of Grip styles... As I've said a couple of times, me too. It's terribly fun to talk the technical merits of this grip or that, but in the end you'd better prepare to prevail in any grip. In my empty hand vs knife high-stress partner drills, tho...

Backwards knifer -- we're here, we're backwards, get used to it :) My comment for the topic is: Won't most fixed blade knives work well with reverse grip? Neutral handles will usually work in both reverse grips, it's a matter of seeing if the blade is suitable. Handles with finger grooves will usual...

Mike's clear, accurate write-ups always appreciated. Mike, you've kind of tied MBC and forward grip together, which is reasonable. Though I'd say that it just moves the question to one of whether you believe peripheral strikes will be more or less effective is stopping the attacker(s). But perfectly...

Agree with both Doc and Michael Cook. One of the problems in talking about grip, is that you end up sounding as if the grip is doing all the work, as opposed to the person actually holding the grip. I also agree that for someone untrained, regular forward grip (edge down) is the way to go. And, to p...

While I love the way the P'kal locks in your hand in RGEI, I also really like a more neutral grip that's secure in multiple different grips. I'm interested in what Mike's cooking up also, he's always got great reasons for his design decisions. In Shivworks, the retraction functions as the slash. Ray...

Mainly I think the reverse grip in my opinion is best for trapping when the other person is doing heavy slash motions and overhead strikes its good to get the blade around the wrist forearm or bicep and do massive collateral damage to the muscle tissue. Mainly I like reverse grips on knives with ne...

I guess the only problem with that is that it would be difficult to match your freehand grind with the sharpmaker 30 degree if that's what you intended to do. Just do what I said above in my post -- lean your DMT hone up against the ceramic sticks, and carefullly hold it there while sharpening with...

Agree ... always wondered if were a materials thing ... maybe more abrasive implies bigger particle size in the rod, which means less cohesion and a more brittle rod. Sharpmaker rods are thin and long, and need to take some pretty good pressure without snapping. That's a guess, I have no idea of the...

I think the Warrior would make a pretty good camp knife if the spine was flat instead of sharpened, and the crossguard was removed. Well, obviously different things work for different people ... for me, the other things that don't work are the finger-groove handle, the high point (other than a skin...

You'd get the warrior for your camp knife if the blade was a little smaller? You must do some interesting camping. Maybe a little sentry removal before hot dogs and smores? :)SnowCrash wrote:Fixed or folding is fine, just can't be over 5.5 inches of blade (I'd get the warrior, but it's just over that limit)

My buddy with giant hands, often doesn't go with knives I recommend to him, because he finds the handles too small. He likes and owns a P'Kal though, so that's one datapoint. In theory, I'd expect the axis and ball bearing and lock to be able to achieve the same levels of strength and (maybe more im...
