Re: A conversation with Gayle Bradley - PSF27
...what then is the purpose of different steels in knives? At times I might give off the impression that steels are all very similar, and in some respects they are. The differences between them are certainly at times so small that there is no way to see differences practically. In most cases when p...

Re: A conversation with Gayle Bradley - PSF27
I have found PSF27 to be an interesting steel, more aggressive than CPM D2 while a little less aggressive than standard D2, that's been my own observations anyway. It used to be argued fairly strongly that steel itself, due to its structure had "cutting ability", due to things like carbid...

I would also agree that the ergos are the really draw back to this knife. I actually don't have any stick in mine and I like how late the lock up is. Mine hasn't moved at all and is very secure.

I may take you up on that this month Stuart, depending on how speedy my tax return gets here. I have been very interested in that cast 440C.

I've heard the Southfork is not a bad fishing knife. Surfinggringo would be the best to answer this though since fishing is his job or close to it

I have heard of it. Likely just residue from when they drilled and tapped the holes.

Re: let's talk about blade play...
I think its to do with the inherent, though minute flex that the FRN knives come with. Like Mallus said, I only notice it when whittling in a hammer grip and I ma applying a decent bit of force. For most things its fine nor have I ever had any security concerns with regards to lock failure.

After Gym Surprises
Got both the Super Blue Stretch and new catalog when I got back from the gym this morning. The stretch is much more substantial feeling than I thought it would be. Gonna be a lot of fun using it this weekend, I thought it was going to be another week till it got here. Also, the new catalog is really...

Re: Kiwi4 or Bradley air for mbc??
If you can deploy them effectively, they'll cut just fine. Michael Janich did a video years back showing what even a .25" blade could do: https://youtu.be/9PWmRWjDhYw" target="_blank . Also, just because Michael Janich and a lot of the MBC instructors prefer the wharncliffe style blad...

Re: S30V Techno? Spyderco has some explaining to do.
You would think that if they were going to be changing from XHP to something else that they would have at least went to S35v. I have both S30v and XHP blades and prefer XHP......hard to quantify why but I do. I don't have S35v though but have heard good things about it .........as if it was what S3...

I have a Super Blue Stretch in the mail and I am also seriously considering a Southfork much to the dismay of my bank account.

Re: Blade Geometry.
Well as most people know thinner tends to cut better as the blade will move through the media easier than a thicker blade will. Most production folders are ground pretty thin in the .020 to .030 range typically, some are thinner while others are thicker, but most will typically be in that range. St...

We came to the same basic conclusions. Even with the car corollary. He is a big car guy. Discussions with non knife people have really shaped how I view knives. I used to be a bit snobbish I suppose you could say. But they have helped me look at it a lot differently. Also learning how to manipulate ...

Blade Geometry.
I was having a discussion with a friend of mine who uses knives. He isnt a hardcore knife nerd like many of us but he uses them often for work and asks my advice a lot. he recently asked me why I use such thin knives most of the time. He prefers thicker ground knives like the Tuff and the Adamas and...

Re: Stretch ZDP-189 question
If they have ones who have locks that don't meet up perfectly, then those are defective and should have been returned. Its just a normal back lock that Spyderco does well. You should have no worries with it failing. My ZDP-189 Endura 4 has never come close to failing and locks up solid. Same lock

Re: Damascus steel use
The outer Damascus layers are just there for aesthetics. There was at one time an argument that pattern welded steels cut better due to the pattern welding, similar to the arguments that carbides helped steels cut better. Both arguments were based on the idea that some kind of contrast left the edg...

I have one of the XHP AK47s from the last BLADE. I have to say they did quite a good job on it. As good as any XHP I've used from spyderco. They are doing a nice hardness as well, 60-61rc.EagleScouter wrote:The design isn't my cup of tea, but I am interested to see how Cold Steel's other CTS-XHP products turn out.

Re: Edge retention slicing cardboard (15 dps, x-coarse DMT)
So, at least according to this data, it seems like anything less than an astronomical amount of cardboard is not really of much value in a test of edge retention unless you somehow got extremely similar groups of cardboard, which is unrealistic as pointed out above. Statistics to the rescue. In the...
