Re: Need opinion on a Christmas gift for a young lady
If you're looking for a self defense knife, why not a knife designed for that specific purpose? My recommendation would be a serrated ARK. This has my interest. Wondering how it would do in a purse or something. She hates wearing things around her neck. Neck carry doesn't work that well for self de...

Re: Economics and Housing Market/Mortgage question.
Your friend might want think about where the government's money comes from: your pockets, in the form of taxes. So, the question becomes, do you want to pony up the money when someone else buys a house they can't afford? I know I don't.

Re: MAP policy change? 35%
I'm no fan of MAP pricing, but reading this thread I get the impression many people think the change to 35% will somehow increase Spyderco's profits. It will increase the dealers' profit margain -- any of whom can choose to offer an "unadvertised" discount.

Although I can only speak from experience about VA (where I live), NC, SC, KY, TN, GA, AL, and FL, you shouldn't have a problem in any southern state. Even in D.C., a Native is completely legal to carry.

I would prefer 3mm. Weight also matters with neck knives -- the lighter the better. Also, I find that a rounded spine does more for "thumb comfort" than a thick spine does.

Re: Dragonfly 2 vs Urban
Urban. One of my early Spydie purchases was a CF Dragonfly and I also have a Dragonfly Salt (SE). The Dragonfly Salt is a nice, very lightweight, knife to stick in your pocket but I much preferred the ergos on the G10 Navigator (still one of my favorite small folders) to the CF Dragonfly and I prefe...

As someone who owns a few neck knives neckers.jpg (and that's not even all of them), allow me to offer a few thoughts based on my own experience. If we're talking mainstream, rather than aficionado, I think we need to start with the question, "what type of blade sells well?" Reverse s-curv...

Re: CPM M4 vs K390
I have to agree. The Urban is an excellent design on its own, but with K390 it becomes a truly outstanding value at only $65.Doc Dan wrote:I, and a lot of others, feel this is one of the best purchases we have made. It is a great design, but the steel kicks it into high gear.

Re: The One Last Chance Challenge!
Great idea, Lance. In a way, I've already done this twice. One of my early Spydie purchases was a blue Delica 3. It just never made the rotation and ended up living in the Spydie drawer (aka, the sock drawer), unloved. Years later, I needed a knife that wouldn't be too heavy for the flimsy pockets o...

Re: Am I the only one who has expensive knives but carry my inexpensive ones?
. . . if I had a Nilakka, I might carry it. Occasionally. Maybe. But it wouldn’t get used. That would be a shame; it's really a very nice knife to use. While I can respect collecting pristine knives, the "display case" type of collecting just doesn't work for me. I want to use the nice th...

Re: Spyderco and Stellite: Would or Should it be used?
I've owned and used knives made from Stellite 6K and Talonite (equivalent to Stellite 6BH) for the last 15 years. I've never heard of anyone using Stellite 100 and there's probably a good reason. For all practical purposes, Stellite 6 is completely corrosion resistant -- anything that will corrode S...

Re: New work knife help?!?
I have a Natve 5 SE and it definitely rocks, but between the two I'd probably go with the Delica Wharncliffe SE, since it offers significantly more cutting edge.
Have you considered getting an SE PM2?

Re: H1 and heat
Actually some steels I think 250F is pretty close to the higher hardness temper temperature. From my notes 5160 at 62 Rc is tempered at 300F. Don't get knives hot! I don't think you're going to find too many knives in 5160 at 62 Rc. A hardness of around 58 is generally recommended for this steel, w...

I also voted FFG and hollow, along with microbevels. My personal favorite is a full height hollow grind, done on a large wheel. It gives most of the slicing efficiency of a flat grind while retaining the benefits of a hollow grind. Something like this (with mandatory Spydie content included :spyder:...

Re: Is blade play exeptible in slipjoints?
I checked my production slip joints. There was no horizontal blade play in the Case Baby Butterbean and damascus Tiny Trapper, Schrade Old Timer (USA made) stockman, Queen whittler, or Victorinox Alox Bantam and Alox Pioneer. Only the hard used, 45 year old, Buck slim trapper had any blade play and ...
