I have tried a lot of oils, I do not care about food safety, because only the pivot and washers are lubed. My favorite oil at the time is Hoppes Elite Gun Oil, quite good stuff :)

Thanx for you suggestions. I now ordered a SiC stone 80 grit, but I do not have high expectations.
Atoma stones are quite expensive, but I might get one (coarsest) next month.

DMT vs. Shapton Glass for Reprofiling

Hey guys, I am searching for a new stone to reprofiling my knives (mostly high alloyed steels as S30V etc.). I used a EZE Lap 150 grit diamond stone for that job, but this stone wore down very quickly. Does the Shapton Glass Stone 220# gets the reprofiling on those steels done quickly? Do they wear ...

Thank you guys!

So i may get a Salt model w/ serrations for christmas.

But is there a chance after sharpening a lot hitting softer areas of the steel? Or how does that grind hardening works when they do it in the factory?

Best regards oliver

Thanks. I mean does Spyderco know why the h1 serrations are so hard and tough? I do not want to buy things nobody knows why they work the way they work. H1 serrations might be outstanding, but too many questions for me that can not be answered I think. I am going to buy vg-10 ;) there I know what i'...

H1 steel - opinions?

Hey guys, I wanted to ask you for an opinion on Spyderco's H1 steel. For me, rust resistance is not very important, but I wanted to get a Tasman Salt which is only available with H1 blade. How is the edge retention compared to f.e. VG10? Edge retention better on serrated or plain edge? What about th...

I read it's about 4000 (japanese grit) some time ago. But I can't promise.

Thanks a lot!

I live in Austria, no problem with laws, even Balisongs can be carried ;)
But for me the aspect of self defence with a knife is irrelevant.

I think I will go for the Stretch again.

Stretch vs Delica

Hey guys, I wanted to ask you for opinions on these 2 knives for EDC. I already own a Stretch FRN ZDP-189 version, but it is worn down and I like Vg-10 better for EDC Tasks, even for the sharpness it takes. Stretch fits very good in my hands. I have problems with too small handles, even my hand size...

Mmm, that 204p is one of the steels that frustrates me! I can fool with that steel for hours, polish it and obsess over it and get it quite sharp but I have never been able to get it to treetop hairs as good as my s30v finished on the medium sm stones. I'm kind of over it. Extreme amount of carbide...

Hey, on my experience S30V works very well with a toothy edge (f.e. I use 1200 grit Eze Lap or DMT Diamonds). It shaves armhair easily, but it is also very very agressive. Polish up such types of steel is not necessary/useful because they can't take an extremely keen edge like Vg10 or Carbon Steels....

Thanks Cliff, before the SM is used, the edge has no dips or chipps. The only problem is that I can't use the flats because of coordination problems. I don't hit at the right angle to the flat surface. No way ;) . As I said, I am very good in hand sharpening on bench stones, but for touching up and ...

Thanks. Cliff, is it ok to use only the corners but applying only light pressure? This is what I do. Sharpness is phenomenal. Otherwise, if this style stresses the edge too much, what about sharpening serrations or recurve blades? The pressure I apply is very low, I only "pet" the corners ...

It is quite impossible. I will got back to freehand sharpening (in which I am very good) and Lansky.... As long there will be no Cat-Eye or circular rods taht fit in the SM, i won't use it anymore. Too bad i bought the diamond and ultrafine rods...

Today I don't use the SM anymore except for serrations. It is so difficult for me to sharpen with the flats, because you have to keep the blade perfectly vertical and perfectly 0° to the flats. Impossible for me. Now I put a micro bevel with a 1200 grit EZE Lap diamond stone. But it is so frustratin...
