Re: Chaparral FRN CQI
Hey guys, I did the spring mod (where it gets repositioned in it's slot), but I noticed that the opposite end got really close to the blade when closed. I didn't like this, so I snipped a piece off that end (circled in red) like 1-2 mm. Do you think it was OK to do this? Knife seems to function fin...

Re: competition for the Para 3?
One downside with these Para 3 LWs seems to be the blade centering. I've read about people with issues, and mine isn't perfect, either. It's not terrible, but it's definitely off to one side. As from being anal about things like this, is there any way this could every effect funtionality, or is it p...

Re: competition for the Para 3?
Thanks :) I am tempted to try a Delica just for the heck of it, but since I already have a Para 3 LW, not sure I would like it. The Para 3 LW seems like a better knife overall, and I like the wire-style clips. Shows how different we all are (and that is a good thing! Otherwise the disussions here w...

Re: competition for the Para 3?
Thanks, guys. Well, I fed my recent Spydie addiction, and now have the Sage 5 LW, as well as the Para 3 LW and also the Chaparral LW. They are all very nice knives, but I think the LW designation is a bit of a misnomer for the Sage and the Chaparral, which are only slightly lighter than their non-L...

Re: Sage 5 Lightweight
Thanks! TBH, I like the look/shape of the Para 3 blade more than the Sage. Also, it's a little lighter. Wish the quality was a bit higher, but it's still not bad. My main thing is, I don't like a lot of weight in my pocket. From the research I've done, it looks like it doesn't get much better than ...

Re: competition for the Para 3?
Just wondering what other Spyderco knives are similar to the Para 3, but maybe a little lighter. I like a blade around 3", and really prefer the compression locks over the others. The Sage 5 LW fits that bill perfectly. It is a better knife than the Para 3 in all ways for me, and better than t...

Re: Sage 5 Lightweight
For an EDC, would you consider this Sage 5 LW or the Para 3 LW to be a better choice? The Sage seems to be higher quality, and the steel is better, but the Para 3 is marginally lighter. Honestly I think it comes purely down to the flavor of Spyderco you like most. The Sage5 inherits more Native DNA...

Re: Anything that can replace Chaparral?
Quick question about the Chap LW: I recently got one, and disengaging the lock was very difficult. I read about the mod where you move the spring a little bit in it's slot. I did this, but noticed that the other end of the spring gets very close to the blade when it's closed (possibly even touches i...

Re: competition for the Para 3?
Sage 5 LW, the PM3 blade is too thick! Blade is too much of a compromise to look like the PM2. Get the sage, it was built to be 3" Sage 5 LW is really nice. To me, the quality seems better. The only downside I can think of is that's it's just a little heavier than the PM3. I like the more aggr...

Re: competition for the Para 3?
If you are partial to compression locks, which I completely understand, I am as well, I don't believe you will find a better knife for the size, materials, build quality and price outside of the Para 3. Regarding weight, staying at a 3" blade, you will be hard pressed to come in under the 2.4o...

Re: Anything that can replace Chaparral?
Just got one of these, and it's a nice knife, but I agree about the lock. It's just a pain to disengage. I just did the mod, and it helps a little. I guess that's the price to pay for such a small, thin knife. I also thought it'd feel lighter than it does. I don't have a scale, but just holding it i...

Para 3 sharp edges on handle?
Is it normal for the edges of the FRN liner (the inner edges) to be sort of sharp? Nice overall, but that aspect of it is bit cheap feeling, IMO.

Re: couple sharpening questions
Thanks for all the tips! I've been messing around with the Sharpmaker a bit these past few days, and it seems to work well. I really don't use my knives all that much, so they stay sharp a while. I've had the Spyder itch lately, and just bought a few new blades...the Yojimbo 2, a PM2 and a Dragonfly...

Re: couple sharpening questions
Thanks, guys! It sounds like the easiest thing to do is just stick with 40 degrees. Isn't that how most of the Spydies come from the factory? Also, good to know about the pull-through sharpener. It sounds like that was a waste of money, although it was pretty cheap. I guess maybe I can just keep it ...

couple sharpening questions
Hi all, I have the Spyderco tri-sharpener, but haven't used it much. I see they recommend using the 40 degree setting, but would there be an advantage to using 30 instead? I found a few other threads where people are typically sharpening to an angle of 30 or less. I have a few knives, including a co...
