Re: What knife is best for…

Knives for specific uses: Cardboard: Resilience S35VN low grit. Works well on multiple layers. Saves time. EDC: Mantra 2. Nothing is more unobtrusive and carries better in pocket. Big Game skinner: SpydieChef. Just the right amount of sweep for bidirectional skinning, no blood & guts corrosion a...

A salty Mantra 2 would be nice but unlikely.

Re: What do you want to see at Shot Show 2024?

When you guys are talking about new designs, is there anything specifically about a design you guys are looking or hoping for? Something practical? Something eccentric? I'd like to see something like Golden-made spydiechef with high vanadium steel. I like its design especially the skinner-type blad...

Re: Time for some different Byrd designs.

Anything new would be welcome from design to blade steel. The product lineup is so limited that it needs new blood to spark up this forum. So sad that the Byrd Wharnies went away. Thought they were brilliant. An upgrade in the Chinese steels used would be big news. A Byrd version of the Astute would...

Never heard of that one before. Gonna have to borrow it now and again. ;)

Re: UKPK Magnacut?

The leaf shape blade makes for a great EDC blade. It's practically a Spyderco trademark. Even though Spyderco's venture into Wharnies did not fare as well as they had hoped, I do wish they would offer more diversity in blade shapes, grind, taper, etc. In the UKPK Magnacut, a drop point design with a...

Re: I have an axe to grind. Confession of an X addict

No longer have any axes to grind. Somehow they somehow mysteriously disappeared. The only thing I have left is an old Buck Hatchet in my collection. Skinned and broke down many a deer in my youth with it.

Re: "My dream spyderco would be"...

Re-issue of the Phil Wilson designed Sprig in the same S90V steel, but pushed up to the hardness that Phil would prefer, and ground very thin behind the edge. I rather liked the original handle and sheath, to be honest, so no need to make any more changes to it. Otherwise, my CPM 15V PM2 has turned...

Re: Current Models with the ball-bearing lock

I am still a bit puzzled that out of comp.lock and CBBL - both Spyderco inventions - the latter gets used so little. The cage itself is an investment so you wouldn’t want to incur that expense on low volume models unless you can reuse the Manix 2 cage. I at one point was designing a knife around th...

Out of the WWII generation, I always thought the Ka-bar and the Cattaraugus bore a similar resemblance and manufacturing process.

Re: Manix Talk - Full sized VS Mini

I regret not getting one of those. I prefer the bolt action over the CBBL. Why? (Honest question, I never could try a bolt action lock let alone compare it to the CBBL) The limited number I've had the privilege of using seem to have a smoother hydrolicky action and takes less effort to operate whil...

Re: Why is 1095 steel popular amongst knife makers?

Reliable and predictable ease of maintenance and performance. Carbon steel Sabatier, Henckel, Gustave Emeril Ern grace many a kitchen. Heck, even Universal L F &C and Cattaraugus continue to turn out many a fine meal across the nation. So why not custom design in time proven steel?

Re: Gotta rethink my hunting/gutting knife…S110V FAIL!

I know your initial purpose in rethinking your hunting/gutting knife was steel type, but there are also so many other important considerations. After all, millions upon millions of game animals have been processed with 1095 and the like. I would probably start off with designs that best served your ...

For me that was kinda painful to watch if I'm being honest. That critter gave its last full measure to provide tasty nutrition for somebody. Not my intention to get preachy because different strokes for different folks, I guess. As knife knuts we have the tools to extract every last morsel or tidbit...

Re: Gotta rethink my hunting/gutting knife…S110V FAIL!

Rethinking purpose and intention from time to time is occasionally necessary to move forward in a positive direction. What are your intentions? What does the job entail? Field dressing only or will you be skinning, breaking down the carcass and butchering too? Trip dependent....day trip or camping o...

Re: BYRD as transition towards Spydie knives (or NOT)

Solid tools and solid designs. Very good build quality. Tighter lockup than many Seki City Spydercos. Many bash 8Cr13MoV because it's a Chinese steel. IMHO it's every bit as wear resistant as Buck 420HC or even a bit more so. Easier to sharpen, too. Buck 420HC may be a bit more stainless, tho. I am ...
