Re: Spyderco Fire Steel?

My Gobspark Ranger and a couple of my backpacking favorites that make great strikers. I do carry the striker that came with it also to save the edge of my tools but in an emergency I will grab what throws the most sparks every time. http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u93/bearfacedkiller/knives/IMG_1...

Re: Spyderco Fire Steel?

Sal, I think it comes down to your intended use. Some last longer and cost less and these are great for backpackers who like to use a fire steel to light their gas camp stove. Some throw tons of Sparks and do not last as long and cost sometimes many times as much and they are probably better for eme...

Re: Native: Maximum Field Use Limits?

I have never done any field butchering but I have field dressed many, many deer and gutted many, many fish with less than a native. I have field dressed a deer with a SAK because I forgot to bring a fixed blade and it worked but cleaning the blood out of it was difficult. I butcher my deer when I ge...

Re: Laminated H1: Yea or Nae?

Not sure about heat treating. I believe there has to at least be a little bit of compatibility between the steels being used when laminated blades are being produced. Maybe somebody can chime in on the feasibility of the idea. It is over my head.

Re: My new favorite EDC...

If it wasn't bbs and too expensive for me with shipping I would have one by now. Still thinking about it though. I have been prowling the exchange for one for a while and they never come up. I just missed the only one I have seen on there by just a few minutes. If one comes my way second hand I am g...

Re: Black Perrin PPT Sprint inbound

Here we go again, another bbs derailment. I shouldn't comment but can't resist. Selling for msrp isn't price gouging and they are not the only ones doing it. We are spoiled by our prefered online retailers and their deep discounts. If Spyderco enforced a map pricing system like Benchmade does then b...

Re: Anyone else super excited for the Szabo Hawk?

I heard that there was a more traditional tomahawk in the works. That is what I am interested in hearing more about. I have little use for a tactical tomahawk. I just don't do a lot of breaching. I guess I am not an operator nor do I do much operating.

Re: What's The Verdict on CTS-BD1?

Many of the knife companies do very well offering knives at an even lower price point than Spyderco offers. Kerhsaw offers some very affordable American made knives. The Skyline and Leek are crazy deals for American made folders. Why wouldn't spyderco offer an affordable American made knife also. Th...

Re: To carry, or not to carry a fire steel...that is the question.

I was overly active in the previous thread so I will just say that for me it is a definite yes. I always carry one when in the wilderness and in the winter I keep one in my inside jacket pocket. I spend a lot of time in the woods in the winter. It would be safe to say that I have more winter surviva...

Ummm... The abrasion marks go the length of the blade, not perpendicular? Bench stone, belt sander or hand sanded? Interesting.

Re: Spyderco's new steel. The one steel to rule them all.

I have no idea what I am getting at here (too many Coors :o :p ) but I have a feeling that when the "game changer" comes it isn't gonna be a "steel". I put steel in quotes because some of our alloys are getting so complex as it is that I am not sure if they are even still steels ...

When are we gonna get an Equilibrium that isn't stainless? As soon as we get a carbon fiber version like my Balance then I am a buyer. :)

Re: What's The Verdict on CTS-BD1?

It is basically Gin1 which was a steel that Spyderco originally built their reputation on. I do not actually have any bd1 but by today's standards it is underwhelming to many. It is currently being used as a budget steel to keep costs down. There just haven't been any models in that steel that inter...

The moose and bear are salt and pepper shakers we got from my mother in law. ;)

I work at Coors in Golden and that stubby banquet bottle was $free.99

Gotta love free beer! :D
