I don't think the colors would be very visible on a perfectly flat surface, they are layered after all. To get the layers out you would either have to round and contour the scales, or machine some type of pattern to them. AFAIK they DID use 3Cr on the Grasshopper, I have one from the first runs and it doesnt have a blade steel marking which would suggest it is 3Cr.
