Re: Are you interested in a new run of Spyderhawk hawkbill?

I’d love to see the Spyderhawk in a FFG Pe format. I’ve always understood H1 has to be hollow ground commercially and in PE format it’s just ok for edge retention. (I just read z1r’s post after writing this, agreed!) I still have the orange SE and will never sell it. I’d definitely buy a different o...

Re: Putting utility aside, what's the best looking Spyderco ever made ?

IMHO the Phoenix is a beautiful and comfortable knife. Not the best tip, a high ride clip, ti bolsters that scratch too easily, not the thinnest edge geometry.

But yea…soooo pretty. In a weird way :)

Re: I hate the Para 3 LW

I have a lot of “perfect Spydies” and some others models outside the brand. Competition for pocket space is never a bad thing :) . One thing you might do is force yourself into a rotation. It not only helps bring spice to a sometimes boring workweek but you can work to sharpen the ones that are cool...

Re: Rockjumper opinions?

I’m speculating here but the handle has natural curvature and the backspace tends to follow that countour. A blade with a ground belly more easily can match that angle as the tip is at the centerline of the blade, not at the bottom. Take that same handle and use a wharncliffe and the tip would tend ...

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.

This is the main reason I use them, I can't afford multiple cuts. I've had extremely sharp plain edge blades slide off material and need follow up cuts, but that never happens with serrations. If it's possible to cut in one motion, it'll get cut in one motion. I had some SE knives but didn’t get th...

Re: Rockjumper opinions?

Even in my current Wharnie-obsessed phase (4 Delicas/Salts, an Endela, a Dfly, and a Manbug) I still can't get past the lack of Boye Dent and Jimping on the Rock Jumper. I can't. I won't. Looks like a nice knife otherwise. With no intention to troll after reading this I’m actually more excited. I d...

Re: Rockjumper opinions?

Maybe the knife is good example of PR gone awry. If they just said “optimized for efficient pull cuts” or something it wouldn’t have been a nuance war, lol. Anyways, looks good. Glad it doesn’t have a choil. Glad it has a nice handle. Glad it’s like $90. I’m sure it delivers, like most Spydies. I’m ...

Re: A New Thread For Axes, Hatchets, Hawks & Other Striking Tools

I have a few weird impulse buys that aren’t folders. As a city dweller usually after a marathon of zombie TV or something silly. A Condor daodao sword, RMJ Weezerker hatchet, and a 5’ poly snake whip which was a fun but short lived hobby. My favorite EDC striking tool though has to be a 18650 cell f...

Re: Hawkbill Grail

I sold a number of greats when funds were very short . The Superhawk sadly didn’t make the cut. It was smooth, comfortable in the hand, and had a deadly cool profile. I felt it could be a little thinner (like 3mm FFG) or could have used a high hollow grind. It was also huge in the pocket…light, just...

Re: Broken Blade

Modern folders from companies like Spyderco are quite tough but are still more oriented for vertical slicing performance.

Even if you don’t snap the blade you can often over time increase tolerances.

Re: Rockjumper opinions?

Blade length is fine. Bringing up the wording of the catalog is the start of a past post that went on and on...I always felt that the meaning was not about length in the blade, but that Sal had tweaked the geometry to have sharpened blade closer to the pivot while still having a "kick" th...

Thanks for the terrific feedback everyone :) Looking forward to seeing it in person soon.

The regrind comment was just considering pushing the envelope. I haven’t chipped my Southard reground ZDP Stretch2 so it’s more a curiosity than a necessity.

Rockjumper opinions?

I have a Rockjumper in the mail for my dad. I recently turned him on to serrated Spyderco knives since he tends to abuse edges (and I have to fix them). I’m sure he will muck up some teeth but the abuse a SE has to see where it becomes non-functionally sharp is wayyy up there. Initially I thought th...

Re: Delica : Saber grind or FFG?

I like the saber grind for aesthetic sake but so long as you are cutting and not stabbing/prying a FFG tip is quite durable.

I don’t use any of my small-mid size folders roughly. Just slicing so lateral strength is less a concern than ease of sharpening and carry comfort.

I really liked mine too. Same construction or with some scales? I recall Alex had a bunch of different mock ups back in the day. I like the thin ss but with smooth Micarta it could be a classy carry.

Strangest place your knife knowledge has randomly come in handy?

A random Discord video game friend asked a question about the best sharpening stone for the money and I dropped about 1000 words about the Spyderco 2x8 medium benchstone and Sharpmaker. Just a random place to have way too many opinions on the topic, lol. You ever find yourself with a lot of knife kn...

Re: Q-Ball

The BBL to me leans a bit more to aesthetic than function. At least compared to the level Spyderco has taken the Compression lock to and evolved with their RIL and lockback designs. Those are just easy too work with. That said, most the BBL knives are just wonderful designs. I impulse bought a Q-Bal...
