Re: Spyderco Salt Knives as Anti-Shark Defense Tools?
It was my first time face to face with an apex predator. Tiger shark. Light dappling on a skin that normally I would consider part of the great beauty of nature.. if it weren't adorning such a deadly adversary. He saw me and circled slowly considering his options. I could see he was hungry by that l...

Re: paramilitary 3
I snagged one of the Amazon Maxamet PM3's for $205. Extra $20 over typical best price. No complaints based on availability. Given my experience with a mule and Native 5, knew I would like the steel. What I did not know and has been a surprise is that I really like the Para 3. Feels like a stubby Par...

Not a great price, but seems a Maxamet PM3 can still be acquired.

Re: Mule 24 Maxamet abuse test
While I'm certainly not as knowledgeable as most around here when it comes to this sort of thing, isn't Maxamet's claim to fame edge holding? And doesn't an abuse test demonstrate toughness which is a different characteristic? My Maxamet mule is a current favorite. Cringed watching what you did to y...

Re: Native LW Maxamet
I've had the Maxamet Mule long enough to decide that this steel goes above and beyond what I'm used to. So, yea. I'll get one of these in spite of the fact that I have no issues with my ZDP189 Delica that does pretty much the same thing. So much for being a minimalist..

Re: Crazy deals @ Sierra and other places
Bought a Pukko for $83. Don't regret the extra $20 over the best possible deal. Knife is certainly worth what I paid for it. Actually, it may never leave the kitchen. This is the best over built paring knife ever.

Re: Mule Team 24
There is a difference between personal experimentation (which is, of course, a great thing) and maintaining a tool for every day use. I've noticed that those who perform cutting tests use relatively coarse stones and a 15 dps angle. When I cut cardboard or filet a fish or cut through nylon straps, I...

Re: Mule Team 24
Surprised the Maxamet mules are still available. I like unique steels not because I test them or have the expertise to appreciate the nuances of materials science, but because my inner geek can't resist something so cool and unusual. However, I don't expect to see any real objective metric kind of d...

Re: Southard Rant
While mine has always flipped open easily and the lock works perfectly I don't use mine as an EDC. I prefer lighter knives for that purpose. That being said I often use it when working around the house and yard. It's a solid, sturdy knife in a good steel that fits my hand well. Still, like the man s...

Re: First super steel - S110v or Maxamet?
I'm in the middle of moving. Lots of plastic, cardboard and tape cutting along with higher than average other uses. I stick a Paramilitary S110V in my pocket for much of this. I also carry around a Maxamet mule. My totally unscientific, unqualified, subjective, random lack-of-anything-empirical-what...

Re: If you had $400, what would you buy?
Assuming starting from nothing and with ballpark prices..
A large folder: Military S110V $175
A medium folder: PM2 S110V $150
Easy to carry EDC: Delica VG10 $65
Really there's no need for the higher end steels in the Mil and PM2 but what fun is that?

Re: Gearing up to freehand sharpen S110V and high vanadiums
It's not hard to sharpen these steels. Decide if you want to sharpen knives to do the chores knives do or if you are interested in experimenting with sharpening perfection. I like diamond stones because they're convenient and since I'm kind of past being fascinated with hair whittling, my DMT fine g...

Edge Pro clones are very inexpensive. The Shapton stones are nice.

Odd that only a few mention models in terms of the function they perform.

Re: MT24P - Mule Team Fixed Blade with Maxamet
Very grateful for all the informative updates! Awaiting mine with bated breath! Please pardon my ignorance, but what is the "Hump"? Many thanks in advance! The hump is that raised area, presumably where your thumb would rest, above the hole at about 2 o'clock. It's a bit too pronounced fo...

Re: Manix LW in RWL34?
There is a local custom maker that works a lot in CPM154. I've had several of his small fixed blades for years now and it's a great all round steel. Thing is, kind of set with PM2's and Mil's in S110V which kind of drags me off topic relative to a nice LW Manix. Would a small to mid filet knife be t...

Re: MT24P - Mule Team Fixed Blade with Maxamet
Sharpened mine on DMT diamond stones. Didn't notice it being any more difficult to sharpen than anything else. Later on I took the 'hump', part of the mule design I could do without, down a bit on a belt sander. Usually I use regular files to clean up a bit after this. The Maxamet was having none of...

Re: MT24P - Mule Team Fixed Blade with Maxamet
Got one today. Anybody experimented with edge angles yet? Going to start with 30 degrees inclusive, do chores for awhile, then see how the edge looks.
