I agree with the Pacific Salt choice. Moisture is going to be a big issue for anything that's in your pocket and the lack of liners make the Salt very easy to clean. I also hear that H1 has a work-hardening edge so it should have a longer-lasting edge the more you use it.

Be safe over there.

Be sure to bring deodorant. You don't want to be stinky when you meet Sal.

The diamond rods are more rough, and yes you won't need to use them unless the knife needs to be re-beveled. As long as you keep your edge in shape with required sharpening, you probably won't even need the diamond rods. It's just that there are going to be occasion when your knife does get that du...

Not a thing to worry about. Tom assured me that since he grinds blades without gloves, he stops to cool the blade when it gets hot to the touch. It takes more heat than that to alter the heat treat. Besides, Tom makes knives from scratch, so he knows what he's doing. ;) That's what I thought but I ...

Ok, so if I want a truly razor's edge, then I want to strop?

If so, I should get a leather belt and metal-polishing compound? Where would you recommend I pick these items up?

If I'm stropping, should I still pick up an Ultra fine stone?

Congratulations, Wouter. As the proud uncle of 4, I can empathize with new parenthood. I'm glad the little Missus is sleeping and providing you and your wife with joy. Take care.

Thanks for making this thread. As you probably already know, I just started the "Sharpening Newbie" thread. I just have a few questions. Are diamond rods more rough than the medium rods? If so, should I use them on very dull knives or on every knife? Additionally, would you recommend strop...

I'm sure there are some RAT fanatics who would argue on behalf of the Izula. I think both are sweet knives.

How do you like the wharncliffe on the Swick?

I truly appreciate this in-depth review, David. You've answered many questions/concerns I had with the UKPK. Many of what you've but the knife through, I would do and your expectations match my own.

I believe the UKPK will be the first CPMS30V Spydie I purchase. Thanks.

I don't use ultrafine stone, but do use strop (sometimes 2000 grit sandpaper) to improve the edge after done with sharpmaker, which works pretty well. Stropping? I thought that was sliding the knife over a leather belt? Ira - Thanks. I have a habit of being anal-retentive too -- I like t...

Do those regrinds alter the heat-treating properties of the steel? I was thinking about having my Salt 1 reground by Krein but I don't want the H1 steel to lose it's rust resistant properties.

Sharpening Newbie

I've recently ordered a Sharpmaker and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. Being new to knives, I have no prior sharpening experience and I've heard time and again that the Sharpmaker is excellent for newcomers. Like all of you knife nuts, I would like to produce razor-sharp edges on my knives. I'm not...

But the UKPK feels like a tough working knife and the Urban feels like Grandad's pocketknife - both are great. Whilst they have obvious apparent similarities, sometimes I feel they are too different to compare perhaps :) Can you further elaborate on the difference between the UKPK and the Urban? Wh...

I was under the impression that DC knife laws were concealed carry knife must not be over 3", and Locking ability was irrelevant. It might be 2.5" now though. Wow, I hope it's not 2.5". Seriously, in the city with one of the highest murder rates in the world, it makes no sense that h...

A 74 yr old was jailed for a pocket knife? That's ridiculous. And the Japanese make superb steel (Spyderco's, Katanas, etc.) I think his being a foreigner had more to do with what happened.
