Re: End of 2020 Opinions on VG-10
So to get to the question, what is your personal opinion on where VG-10 falls in the hierarchy of knife steels in 2020? I think VG-10 is still a good stainless steel in 2020 as far as how its physical properties translate into work knife applications. I find that Spyderco's VG-10 is just fine with ...

Re: VG-10 vs LC200N
According to Larrin, VG-10 is 25% better at edge holding than LC200n. That's VG-10 at a hardness of 62 Rc, if I remember correctly. I think Spyderco's Seki makers generally do VG-10 at a hardness of 58 to 59 Rc. Which is a good target hardness for VG-10 in a cutlery application... VG-10 gets rather...

Re: Oddly Effective: A Long-Term Review of the Karahawk as a Warehouse Knife
Interesting real world review! Thanks for sharing. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment :) The Karahawk was never even on my radar before. Even if it still isn’t, it’s great to read about how it performs for real-world utility use. I carry knives for utility as opposed to SD, so it’s alwa...

Re: Poll: How do you carry your Spyderco Dragonfly?
I voted for the first option (clipped, front pocket most of the time but occasionally back pocket) since that's how I carry the DF2 when wearing "regular" pants. I do carry my DF2 Salt IWB when trail running in running shorts/running pants, though.

Re: Oddly Effective: A Long-Term Review of the Karahawk as a Warehouse Knife
I owned a karahawk for a while, but unfortunately it just didn't fit my smaller hands. The finger ring was too big, and in the wrong place no matter what grip I tried. I'd love a model with the same blade size, but a grip fit more for smaller hands. This is one reason I immediately pre-ordered a Sw...

Re: Oddly Effective: A Long-Term Review of the Karahawk as a Warehouse Knife
Very interesting to read, zuludelta. Thanks for the in-depth review. It's an interesting model that doesn't get much press, that's for sure. Thanks! And yeah, I am a bit surprised at the dearth of user reviews of the Karahawk, or other folding karambits for that matter. It seems to me that karambit...

Oddly Effective: A Long-Term Review of the Karahawk as a Warehouse Knife
The Spyderco Karahawk is, by all indications, intended by its designer Sal Glesser to be a defensive tool. The marketing copy on the Karahawk product page on Spyderco.com touts the “high-strength back lock mechanism designed to withstand the stresses of defensive use” and a finger ring optimized fo...

Re: Apparently - Cold Steel Has Been Bought
I'd like to be optimistic about all this, but if past is prologue, things aren't looking good. We all know what happened to the quality and reputation of Schrade & Camillus after they were acquired by larger corporate conglomerates (the private equity firm angle makes me even more leery). I've h...

Re: Evolving tastes over time?
I was fairly ignorant of metallurgy, sharpening, and industrial design when I first started getting seriously into knives as a teen, so regarding those aspects, my tastes have definitely "evolved" for the better. If nothing else, I am better informed about the science, engineering, craft, ...

Re: Finally picked up a Caribbean
Thanx much. sal You're welcome, Sal. I'll post a full long-term review after I've put in at least a couple of hundred hours of use in it (as I will with the RockJumper). I also need to start on the long-term review of the Li'l Temperance 3, as I've now put in an additional 300 hours of work use int...

Re: Finally picked up a Caribbean
Looking forward to your comments. sal And here they are! :) Further impressions after two (very tough) shifts at work: The knife came very sharp out of the box. I didn't have enough time to put my own edge on it before starting work but it didn't matter... I don't think I could have done a better j...

Finally picked up a Caribbean
I've been hemming and hawing about getting a Caribbean since it first debuted three years ago but the timing & price was never right. Finally picked one up today at a local military surplus shop's Black Friday sale. My first impression: This is the (not so) Li'l Temperance 3 Salt I've been looki...

Re: What is it that sets a good knife apart from a great one?
Great Knife = a good knife that aligns with your personal preferences. CG This. I think what makes a knife "good" can be attributed to certain factors that a majority of users can agree on. Things like excellent build quality, premium materials, a design with an eye towards functionality,...

Well I’ve just gotten the bad news. I’ve got covid. I live with two people who are susceptible and my girlfriend’s entire family is susceptible. So, more than likely I’m stuck in a single small room for the next few months. And I’m almost out of Star Trek to watch... What’s the solution? More knive...

Re: First SE Spy27 model will be....?
Has anyone yet tested "Spy27" extensively to see how it holds up with serrated blades? Looking at it on paper I would guess it's probably all right. But actually testing it with hard cutting jobs tells the whole story usually. It should perform similarly to serrated S35VN if the chemistry...

This. Alternatively, it could be galvanic corrosion from extended contact with one of the sheath rivets. Galvanic corrosion, while somewhat rare, is not unheard of in marine-grade stainless steel.VooDooChild wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 11:53 pmI will guarantee it is rust transfer from one of the rivets on the sheath.

Re: Which models bring out the best of each steel?
I don't know if it necessarily brings out the best in the steel, but in my case pairing a high wear-resistance steel with a small knife design really highlights that particular attribute of the steel, especially if you can compare it to a more conventional steel in the same design. Case in point: I ...
