Re: Dr Larrin Thomas' New Video on Knife Steels

That looks fascinating. It’s in my Amazon cart. I like the period-appropriate music, clothing, and black-and-white videography in Larrin’s video. What fun!

Re: Is the Endura still well loved in 2023?

The only negative thing I have to say is that the ergos I think could be improved slightly. My second finger lands on the first handle bump which creates a hot spot during some tasks. It seems quite a few people mention this. I am thinking about softening the shape of that bump, but I would be a li...

Re: What knife steel and handle are best for cold weather high altitude hiking?

Any knife with a handle that insulates your hands from the chilly metal inside should do. Avoid over-stropping as that can fatigue the apex and/or create a burr that’s wicked sharp but folds over in use, becoming instantly dull. Puuko knives were developed for use in the cold. Handled in wood or sta...

Re: Is the Endura still well loved in 2023?

Yes, the Endura is well-loved still. I have three of them, including my most recent purchase which is of a K390 SE Endura. It’s a great knife.

Re: What knife steel and handle are best for cold weather high altitude hiking?

I used to live at 8300 feet elevation in Colorado and worked outside in winter. I never saw any edge degradation in all that time except from use.

Instead of the blade, maybe the prybar could flow from the handle. Make it an integral and charge $400 for it. Instead of Dragonfly, call it Dragon Scale.
Having a pry tool integral to a metal handle scale sounds reasonable.

I wish I knew. Steel is much-studied but still a mystery. Vivi and Ladybug are both correct, but there’s more to the story.

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.

I spent 90 minutes last night reprofiling my new K390 SE Endura on the CBN rods at the 15 degree setting. It’s a slog. I’m not counting strokes, just focusing on proper technique. It appears that I’m halfway done but that’s an illusion because progress slows as the new bevel gets wider. The points d...

Re: Would a matriarch blade fit in a endela handel.

When I line my closed Endela with my open Matriarch, pivot to pivot, the tip of the Matriarch extends about 1mm past the tail of the Endela’s handle. Close, but no cigar.

One good bump deserves another. I’m prepared to reprofile my incoming K390 SE Endura to 15 degrees if it needs it.

Re: The ultimate Delica

When my SE K390 Endura arrives I plan to check the angle of the serrations. If they need it, I will reprofile on the 15 degree Sharpmaker setting using the CBN rods. I did this on my VG-10 SE Endela and am very pleased with the result. Update: it arrived and the serrations need to be reprofiled. Min...

Re: The ultimate Delica

On one had I really WANT an SE in k390, on the other hand I am also a it weary about the sharpening. I have recently spent 3 hours of sharpening (in several sessions) of our MAC Superior bread knife (has a continuous wave style of serrations) as it was really dull after several years of use and it ...

If your stones can’t get right up to the plunge, you can freehand that last bit with diamond paddles. I also use them to touch up my carbide router bits on the flat face grind.

I also have wondered why a regular VG-10 Delica or Endura wasn’t offered in FFG SE. I love my SE Endela, carry it constantly. Confession: I just ordered a SE K390 Endura. First knife I’ve bought in 2023.

Re: What do you view as the main grip on these types of knives?

I can not really tell what my main grip is because when i am using my Manixes or Shamans its about a 50/50 split for me if i use the choil or not. It all kinda depends what i am cutting and how the acces to the thing i need to cut is. Personally i do not understand the problem some people have with...

Re: Sharpmaker and scissors

How does one put scissors on a sharpmaker? It’s in the DVD. You insert a rod into the end of the Sharpmaker base, flat side up. It angles out about 11 degrees to the table. The scissors are held open with the flats of the blades in a vertical plan perpendicular to the long axis of the base, and at ...

Re: if you could only own a 5 Spyderco knife collection:

As said above, impossible! The five I actually carry the most are:

Endela LW SE VG-10, bevel lowered to 15 degrees
Manix LW S110V, thinned and waved by a pal
Paramilitary 2 M390, bone stock
Pacific Salt H1 SE, waved by me
Stretch ZDP-189 blue FRN, polished and de-humped by me with concave spine.
