Re: Stropping Question
For anything with serious carbides in it, I use DMT 1-micron diamond paste on my strop. For carbon steels or softer stainless (e.g., VG-10), I just go with the green chromium oxide stropping paste. I made a two-sided strop from a piece of scrap wood (in my basement) and a bag of scrap leather (which...

Re: Martial Arts Experiences Discussion Thread
Thanks, James. Bennet Omalu was a keynote speaker at an academic conference at my college several years ago and I was lucky enough to be part of a group that had lunch with him. I asked him about the dangers of different forms of martial arts training and he was adamant that any type of impulsive fo...

When a Bully Travels an Hour to a Boxing Gym and Challenges the Boxing Coach This boxing coach is admirable; he showed a TON of restraint. Jim Yeah, that coach definitely showed some restraint. We used to have this kind of thing happen a lot in Hawaii. Some tough guy would show up and say, “I want ...

Re: pocket ceramic for serrations
I keep a Lansky Spyder sharpener in my tackle box ( https://lansky.com/index.php/products/spyder-sharpener/ ) and I have a second one for my get-home bag. It does a great job of free-hand sharpening Spyderedge knives because the three different points of its “triangle” shape are designed to be perfe...

Re: Flying into Canada
Hi Takuan, Talkin' Story: When we had an audience with the Canadian Crown some time ago, we had 4 knives in court, Rescues. We were trying to nail down a definitive number to be able to build to in order to meet Canadian knife laws. (how many lbs of force needed to be legal). #1 was stock Rescue an...

Re: Aqua Salt with other steels? Would you be interested?
I have been using my SpyderEdge Aqua Salt all week on the South Carolina coast. It has been my constant companion while sea kayaking, crabbing, fishing, and cooking. It is one of the most comfortable and versatile blades I have ever used. I hope Spyderco can find a way to keep it around.

Re: Flying into Canada
Thanks, everyone. I own two Dragonflies—a serrated Salt and the green G-10 model with VG-10—so I might just tighten down the pivot of one of those and hope for the best. Thanks for the tip about tightening the pivot to make the knife un-flickable! I might just stick with a multitool or SAK, though i...

Flying into Canada
I’ll be flying into Canada in a few months to attend a conference in Montréal. I understand that the CBSA routinely confiscates knives that can be opened by “centrifugal force,” including blades that can be flicked open with a snap of the wrist after pressure is applied to a thumb stud or blade hole...

I’ve had experiences similar to Co Pilot’s where people get intimidated by a one-handed knife opening because they think you might have an automatic knife. It’s funny how opening the exact same knife slowly with two hands will get little to no reaction from the same people. I always carry two knives...

Blackthorn is a nice balance between sturdiness and lightness. The head on my cane is narrow, which makes it easy to grip and fairly light, but they can vary since each cane is unique. My dad has one that is very stout from the same maker due to the natural variance in the wood.

Sorry to hear about the Sabre failing you like that, Jim. I like the Kimber Pepper Blaster II because it uses a chemical ignition system instead of compressed gas to propel the pepper spray. It has a muzzle velocity over 110 miles per hour and shoots on a flat trajectory for a good 5 yards. When one...

Re: Best Spyderco budget beater knife.
Hi, Jurmuscle. I don’t know if it’s cheap enough to count as “budget,” but the Pacific Salt is my favorite “beater” knife. H1 and LC200N are easy to resharpen and stand up to a lot of abuse (in terms of both toughness and corrosion resistance). The back lock is critical for a knife that will be used...

Re: No longer sure about 14C28N
Knife Steel Nerds rates 14C28N as being much tougher than BD1N, with only slightly less edge retention and identical corrosion resistance: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/10/19/knife-steels-rated-by-a-metallurgist-toughness-edge-retention-and-corrosion-resistance/ (see the chart just after the “Sta...
