Re: I need a penguin

https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=93766&start=80 Can this be as factory thing? I just would like to say thank you for sentiment. As a die hard lover of Spyderco knives having one of my designs picked up by them would be unbelievable and a dream come true. That being said, I ha...

Re: PerfBaby Mule

I just wanted to slightly amend my previous comment, but decided it would be better to not just edit it. Regarding using a drill press, in my opinion that is the bare minimum with solid carbide bits. A mill would be way better, but I figure if you have a mill you’re probably ahead of me experience w...

Re: PerfBaby Mule

I found a feed/speed chart for carbide tipped tools and it reads 100-150 RPM with coolant for "high strength steels" and 65-105 RPM for "high temp stainless steel alloys". The only thing that changes for diameter of the bit/hole is the feed rate, but since I'll be doing feed rat...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

How did I miss this? The Emperor! …you know, as in penguin? The Emperor is collaboration-worthy, no? I had actually thought of this one originally as being called the Adelie (pronounced Uh-del-E) Penguin, because it’s so small. However, I still have the handle offcut from my Rex76 Mule which I plan...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

I finally got around to grinding the bevels on my little Penguin slipjoint made from m398 Mule scrap. As far as my experience grinding the m398, it really wasn’t too bad. Most of my experience is with basic carbon steels, which I do around 75% of my bevels before heat treat. Obviously this is a tiny...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Here are some progress picks of the little slipjoint that I’m making out of the handle scrap of my M398 Mule. There is still a bunch of work to do on this but since it’s felt like it was worth sharing since it now has more of the Penguin look that I’m going for. I plan to contour the g10 some more, ...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Penguin? Correct! I’ll take it as a good sign that was so easy :) The plan is for black g10 that is sculpted to leave exposed Ti to create the white belly, and the backspacer will be feet so it can stand up with the blade at the half stop, and will fold to stick out the back of the scales slightly ...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Thought I’d share what I’ve been up to with some of my Mule handle scraps. So far I’ve mostly just messed with the m398 scrap but the Rex76 is definitely going to get used. Keep in mind that this funky little slip joint knife is a work in progress, and is going to be an animal inspired knife in the ...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Small update on the Rex76 compression lock Mule. I made a titanium deep carry clip and enlarged the Spydiehole since my last post. This one is pretty much done, other than some cosmetic things I might do like bead blasting and anodizing. I’m still not sure what I’m going to do for the next one. Curr...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Long time no see everyone. Great first thread to come back and find. Terrific looking work Casper. If you need more Mules to experiment on, let me know as I can send some sharp little volunteers your way. If you’re serious about this I’m definitely interested! My preference is Mules that are made i...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

I decided on OD Green Terotuf for the scales. There is still some work to do with final touches and making the clip, but I am already loving this knife. I’ve contoured the scales to where it feels really nice in my hand and with the flipper tab it is pretty fun to fidget with (not typically somethin...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

Today I got the tang of the blade cut to accept the lock bar, and was able to get the compression lock functioning nicely. I haven’t gotten it tuned to the point that the flipper tab is working, but I’m really considering removing it anyways. I’m probably going to add another stand-off right behind ...

Re: What Grit Satin Finish on Mules?

I would guess that it’s about a 180-220 grit scratch pattern. A worn 220 belt is probably too fine but fresh 220 should be about right. Likewise a fresh 180 might be too coarse but a worn one might be right. To stay on the safe side start with the finer grit since sanding out coarser scratches is mo...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

I made some real progress this evening on the compression lock for my second folding Mule. Cutting the lock bar is mostly done but will need a little refinement. The cuts were done free hand with a dremel cutoff wheel and a jewelers saw. The next big step will be doing the cutout in the tang to rece...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

I got a bit of a surprise while drilling through the Rex76 Mule today. Using a solid carbide drill bit I was making a hole that will locate where the stop pin hits the blade tang. As I was punching through I noticed the bit wasn’t cutting as well so I stopped, only to find that the bit had chipped a...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

The other day I was able to get started on my second version of a folding Mule. This time I have decided to keep the shape of the standard Mule for the most part, and will be using a Rex76 Mule as the blade donor this time. My current plan is for it to use a compression lock, which will be a first f...

Re: My Folding Mule Project

This has inspired me a bit! I have been designing my own folding knives and while trying to get a handle on various locks, and I've crudely modified my Clipitool Rescue to remove the extra tools and thickness, but I hadn't considered modifying a Mule into a folding knife like this. I'll keep this i...

Re: R.I.L. "Framelock" Question

The material is removed to make the area that is bent thinner for flexibility, and it shouldn’t significantly matter which side of the lock bar it is removed from. I’d think there is be a slight advantage to removing it from the outside of the knife because this puts the “pivot” point of the bend mo...
