Can I use the Sharpmaker to sharpen the Southfork?

I was initially very excited when I learn of the Southfork -- a chance to get a piece of Mr. Wilson's work, and S90V steel to boot! My heart however quickly sank when I thought about the problem of sharpening the knife when it becomes dull. Do I need sophisticated gear to sharpen S90V? I only have t...

On a very basic level, if you are slicing or draw cutting then the lower the grit finish the higher the cutting ability and edge retention. If you do push cutting it is the opposite. If you use the finish which is opposite the cutting method then the performance will be very low in both respects so...

If you are going to go serrated, may as well go for a serrated H1 knife. You may try that as an experiment.

Gayle Bradley difficult to close

I have bought a Gayle Bradley and is happy with it. There is a problem though regarding closing the knife. The liner lock is too stiff and it takes a great force to push the lock outwards before I can close the knife. Is this normal, and are there any tricks to smoothen up the closing? Thanks!

Thanks jackknifeh, for the trouble in digging up the interesting article. If the working hardness of M4 is 63.5 - 65.5, then the hardness of the initial batch (64 - 65) is actually within spec. The 'heat treated to a RC that is too high' thing that I heard elsewhere seems wrong then.

JNewell wrote:That is also my recollection from my own (older) searching - but the anecdotal reports of later production batches would certainly be consistent with lowering the Rc range from the unintended early 64-65Rc range.
So JNewell, do you know the supposed Rc range of the standard Gayle Bradleys?

Some questions about Gayle Bradley

I am thinking of buying a Gayle Bradley and would be grateful if the experts can give me some advice: (1) I have heard that the first batch of this knife was treated to a higher RC than later batches. Is this true? (2) If there is indeed a difference, does this cause any advantages or disadvantages ...

This discussion of the effect of acids is interesting. Makes you wonder whether there are steels that are more immune to acids than others. Oops, thread drift. Sorry.

I just have one negative for M4 Jack, it dulls when cutting acidic food. I have been carrying my GB for the last few days at the construction site and I just forgot about this characteristic. I remembered only after I cut a few green mangoes and tried to strop it back at the house. I was kinda surp...

I heard that the first batch of Gayle Bradleys is hardened to a higher RC than the subsequent batches. Is this correct, and does anyone know the RC rating of later batches?

That's the situation buyers outside the US often face. Not all dealers accept pre-orders from outside the States.

I am a little disappointed that Spyderco decides to keep the previous handle material for the Street Bowie. I am hoping they can change to something else, such as micarta, say.
