Re: EDC: Every Day Carry. What does it mean to you?
EDC means at least two blades: a "normal" "task / working" blade, like the Gayle Bradley the Slysz Bowie, the Endura, Tighe Stick, Manix XL DLC, along with a more defense oriented blade, something like a Karahawk, a Dodo, a Massad Ayoob, a Matriarch, BattleStation, Szabo Folder, ...

Re: Sharpening S110V on Ken Onion WS.
David - I personally would go a slightly different route, largely b/c I like measuring. Aside: I think you'll do fine holding an angle with the WSKO - it's really easy to do. Basically, by adding the BGA, you have created a miniature belt grinder that is capable of creating a nice convex edge. I thi...

Re: Fine Grit Ceramic Slip Stone v. Fine Ceramic File Set
Thanks Sal. Just to be "that guy" what is your take on machining a metal handle with a set screw, and using a piece of old bicycle inner tube between the set screw and the ceramic to prevent breakage / cracking from overtightening? I'm trying to teach myself basic machining techniques, and...

Fine Grit Ceramic Slip Stone v. Fine Ceramic File Set
Greetings, one and all. I have a Spyderco fine ceramic file set, and I love it - the shape of the files permits me to sharpen odd shaped and smaller blades, including serrations. My only whine is that the files are small, and hard for my fubar fingers to grasp. I'm thinking the larger slipstone migh...

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Left pocket: Gayle Bradley Folder 1, with the solid steel liners, a mirror polished edge and swedge, and a custom worked Salsa Patina. Right pocket: a brand-spankin' new Tighe Stick folder purchased as a discod model. I absolutely am head-over-heels smitten with this blade, wish I could have purchas...

Re: Sharpening S110V on Ken Onion WS.
You'll be fine, assuming that you know how to use the WS; the only caveat I would toss out is that I would use the Blade Grinding Attachment, an extra piece, about USD 70) for the WS-KO sharpener. While I would always use that piece, I think it's especially important with the harder supersteels. I h...

Re: Discontinued models on sale... what to do?!?
I succumbed.
I placed an order for the Tighe Stick over the weekend. It was calling so loudly and non-stop to me that I had to do something to stop my ears from bleeding. This seems to have worked.
For now.

Re: Knife Sharpening: Does speed of abrasion make a difference?
At the risk of sounding flippant, I've found that it gets the work done faster - ignoring the heating issue. It also gets any mistakes done faster. There are a couple problems in working with slow speed stuff: one of them really comes into play if you are working on highly-polished true mirror finis...

Re: Hygiene and Physical Contact at Social Events?
I've found that if I take a tape measure and chalk line with me, and when I arrive at the event I find the center of the room and mark it. I then stand there, cleaning my fingernails with my Tatanka. That eliminates 99% of people approaching me. If somebody does approach me, they inevitably are prou...

Re: Where Spyderco Knives Fall Short
Decades ago, there was a popular saying that went along the lines of little boys worried about measuring their knives in an attempt to self-compensate, while real men just used their knives. It might not have been knives, now that I think about it. Sounds like the saying needs updated: Little boys w...

Re: Any thoughts on the new Wicked Edge GO?
I guess I missed it at Blade show this year. Anyway, I'm considering getting a guided system for doing heavy reprofile work and ran across this system today. The preorder price looks pretty good at $150. I was talking with the guys at WE about this product. In essence, here's their plan: they belie...

SharpMaker: Some History & A Use Question
I happened across a website for an older sharpening pro who listed out the various systems he had used / owns. He listed the SharpMaker, Model 204MF, which is the same as we know it today (overlooking any tweaks to ceramics stone manufacturing). He also listed the SharpMaker, Model 203MF, which he s...

I felt the same way........ before I got a black Southard . I feel NO stick on unlocking whatsoever. It's been flipped a gabillion times and just gets better! No reservations at all with Spydie locks of this type at all. Joe Isn't this such a great knife? Every time I read that somebody has written...

Re: Bad Customer Service
The "j" shape near the ricasso is a big problem with spyderco as of late I hate to say. Something is going on with their method of sharpening lately, which is both removing way too much material and simultaneously terminating the plunge too early. Effectively leaving 1/16 to 1/8 (yes, I h...

Re: Phil Wilson Thoughts on Steels
I've been carrying my S90V Manix2 XL this past week and doing some yard work with it (my Tasman Salt still rules out there). Figured I need to carry a bigger knife so I'm not shocked when the Police4 finally comes to hand. Rather than use a box cutter (my usual tool) for all that awaits me in the g...

Re: Phil Wilson Thoughts on Steels
Thanks for the Phil Wilson articles. <snip, cut> I'll have to dig a little deeper to see if I can come up with any justification for my notion that I like S90V better than S110V. That's one of my excuses for the fact that a couple of hours ago I ordered a Blurple S110V Manix2 to compare to my much ...

Re: Diamond rods inferior to CBN rods?
I use the CBN rods when I use the Sharpmaker to remove lots of metal; they are good enough for me that I'm not looking back, at all, and thinking "If only I had the diamonds...". I've played quite a bit, and have come up with the following: keep the CBN rods (I use on all rods, but the CBN...

Re: Phil Wilson Thoughts on Steels
I was a little put off to see an error in the basic heat treating article. Carbides don't form during the high heat cycle when austenizing. I think it's most likely a typo. This would seem to be appropriate to insert right about now: "Citations please." //forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?...

Re: Phil Wilson Thoughts on Steels
The performance of many of our "inferior" and "outdated" steels is absolutely fine in the real world... Moreover, I think the problem is that there is a tremendous amount of groupthink when it comes to certain parts of the knife world. As a newcomer myself, I get swept up in the...
