The knife that he used to cut the power cables was the Manix 2 XL, not the LW ;)

Re: Tenacious Steel

Some of the makers have a hard time with other steels. We've managed to get one maker to use BD-1 and heat treat it correctly (The new Raaven 2 and Crow 2), but the Tenacious maker hasn't got it yet. I hope that going to BD-1 will not raise the price of the value line. A Tenacious in Singapore righ...

Re: Neck Knives

Yeah, 4mm is overbuilt. I have another design I'm working on that should be a good "combat" or just strong but compact general purpose knife, and I plan on it only being 3mm. You think so? I have found that it also depends on the blade geometry - with the Enuff I would have preferred a th...

Re: Neck Knives

Oh dear, sounds like you really put that Manix through the ringer... No wire cutters available? Yeah I've found some pretty ancient gear going through military store rooms, but what impressed me the most was when I paid a visit to Taiwan and saw all the old US army deuce and a half trucks that they ...

Re: Mid-Year Supplement Discussion Thread....

Sal we love you but if the prices keep rising we have to go talk with the bank to be able to buy one. :( Haha tell me about it, prices in Singapore are much the same - roughly double what they pay in the USA. For me that means that the majority of the Taichung models are just too expensive to even ...

Re: Neck Knives

Many thanks John for the reply - fascinating info. I was never a mortarman but did train to repair them and was always impressed by just how massive the big 120mm ones were. I'm surprised they still use waxed paper in this day and age... Coincidentally, on my last reserve exercise two years ago I al...

Re: Neck Knives

In general, I find "neck knives" to be relatively specialized. I'd just usually rather be using something like my Manix 2 LW, Persian 2, or Manix 2 XL for most tasks that don't require a Camp Defender. John Hello John, just wondering which Spyderco models you preferred to carry whi...

You really prefer a fully serrated edge as a camping/fishing knife? Please say more, I'd like to learn why :)

Re: Mid-Year Supplement Discussion Thread....

I'm very interested in the Proficient - Sal Glesser has spoken highly of Chris Claycomb in interviews and it seems he produces very refined designs with great attention to detail. Will be a good companion to my Serrata :) Will also be nice to see the Bradley 2 - none of the first generation have eve...

Re: Neck Knives

As somebody who lives in the tropics neck knives are pretty much a non-starter for me as they are about as conspicuous as you could possibly get. Also we only wear a single layer of clothing here (at most) so hiding it would involve wearing it next to the skin - also not good due to sweat, chafage e...

Re: Newer FRN/FRCP, Why so flat?

I just compared my Delica LW with my new Native 5 LW and you are right - the former is definite more rounded. Fortunately this difference is not an issue for me in an EDC knife.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fomulation of FRN/FRCP when used in a knife with liners vs no liners?

Re: How did you fall down the Spyder hole?

I started out as a SOG guy - my first serious folder was one of their Vulcans. After that I got an Endura and the rest is history. I have a few Benchmades (710, Minigrip and the beautiful Volli) but apart from that my collection is all Spyderco. In particular I like the lightness of Spydercos and ho...

Re: S35VN vs. S30V

Yes Cliff I agree. However, I believe that it's important not to be too picky, especially when it comes to production knives. If the knife is supplied sharp and with a fully functional lock off centre tips and slightly asymmetrical grinds can be forgiven. I remember Eric saying in a video that when ...

Re: S35VN vs. S30V

I would have to think it's uncommon or even rare but certainly not impossible. I've had plenty of odd grinds on Spydies before. Very seldom they aren't functionally very sharp. So have I, but never from the USA factory. What's more unusual is that I went through all of the pieces in the shop and th...

Re: Official Halpern Titanium Mule Team Handle Information

A couple of questions for the collective wisdom of this thread:

1. Which handles would you recommend for a working knife? Flat or contoured?
2. I personally prefer a smooth handle - does that mean going for the G10 over the Micarta?

Thanks!

I recall Sal mentioning in a previous thread that he and Eric are usually carrying prototypes, so it's unlikely to be a production knife :)
