Re: Sharpness testing
For me, I use phone book paper as a testing medium for the most part. I use it to see how a edge is at the end of the day or if I pull a knife out of the SpyderPac, as well as during sharpening to see how it's going. When you cut enough of it, you get a feel for how your knives cut the material, and...

Re: New Models Dropped: ATR 2, Para 3 Maxamet
The handle ergonomics are good, but it feels like the Stretch to me in that my hand feels more natural back on the handle rather than choked up into the choil (this latter grip is how I find most be-choiled Spyderco models). This is something I look for in every folding knife I purchase from Spyder...

Re: New Models Dropped: ATR 2, Para 3 Maxamet
Thanks again to Mark's Outdoors in Vestavia Hills, AL for letting me handle and photograph their knives. Album link: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmeS14LK ATR 2: This is a big and burly knife. It's interesting, too big and heavy for my taste. The blade is more of a heavy-use cutter, with a strong tip and a ...

Re: New Models Dropped: ATR 2, Para 3 Maxamet
Pat, Is that PM3 in your "box of fun"? Chris showed it to me but it was clearly tucked away for someone! The ATR was bada$$ but like you, bigger than I would carry. High quality on both Nope. They got their standard 2x of a new model in, and both were claimed. I'm not 100% sure I'm gettin...

Re: Standard Production vs Sprints, S30V vs X steel, and market saturation..
This is an interesting topic. I think that for me personally I like sprints because I like variety in a general sense, both in steel and in handles. But getting a base model doesn't dissuade me if the knife speaks to me already, like the Sliverax or all the Sages, or the Techno, all in S30V. Do I wi...

Re: Chaparral Handle Materials
If they did a handle in all-CF, I'd buy a third Chappy pretty quickly. I'd even more want it if it were a premium version with CTS-204P (keeping in the Carpenter family, and in no way a knock on CTS-XHP). Solid CF would probably sell real well specially if it had some texturing/milling like the lat...

Yeah that’s who’s it is. And I’m a bit embarrassed now that I didn’t know that about the lanyard. :Ptwinboysdad wrote: ↑Sat Mar 03, 2018 2:39 pmChris at Mark's said it came with the lanyard, but I asked him if he made it when he showed it to me

Re: Sharpening: Do you touch up every day, or use until a full sharpening is needed?
Both. Sometimes I touch up/strop even when it's not "necessary" but I definitely don't do it every single day, and sometimes a knife gets to where it needs more than a simple strop. The real question is "how sharp do you need the knife on an everyday basis", because I often will ...

Re: Primary steel choice: S30V vs S35VN vs CTS-XHP
I’m very amused at people being unimpressed with S30V but all on board when S35VN is an option. They're all three more than satisfactory, and I have multiple knives in S30V and XHP and one in S35VN. I prefer XHP because it feels easier to sharpen, but by no means am I trying to denigrate any of them.

Re: Primary steel choice: S30V vs S35VN vs CTS-XHP
Of course only Spyderco can answer question #2. But, for the sake of offering you a quick answer, I work with all 3 steels and I can answer #1 & #3 for you. 1. S30V is indeed much easier to acquire than CTS-XHP. And..lower cost. 3. Just Cost. S30V is still less expensive than S35VN. Plus back w...

Re: Shipping of internal parts
I would love to be able to get parts, but I also know it's difficult for a company the size of Spyderco, with multiple manufacturing locations, so many models with so many changes, to be able to do that. I would be excited to see some parts be stocked at retailers; I can see how that could eliminate...

Primary steel choice: S30V vs S35VN vs CTS-XHP
So a LOT of Spyderco knives use CPM S30V, which is a fine steel that used to be the cutting edge (pun intended) of knife steels. It's still one of the best, but a lot of folks seem to think it's been left behind a bit by better steels that are easier to sharpen and less prone to chipping. Now, I per...

Re: Edge Test
I found that using multiple media tells me a lot about a knife as I'm sharpening. I use regular paper and phonebook paper as a general guide. Then, when I get towards the end of sharpening a knife, I use hair. I draw a hair up against the edge vertically to see if I can shave/split the hair lengthwi...

Re: Spyderco’s Polestar & Alcyone should not be in the “VALUE LINEUP”
Thanx Joris, I agree with you, but it seems that the price is more important to most than the design or the fit and finish. As it is going now, they probably won't survive. sal I think that when you get into the "budget" or "value" part of the market, price truly becomes the lar...
