Re: Has the size of serrations changed over the years?
I asked a similar question a few years ago. I thought I’d spotted that Golden serrations were shallower than Seki serrations. Sal said that the grinding tools wear during their life so the profiles vary subtly as the tool gets older. The older the tool, the shallower the serrations. I prefer shallow...

Re: Your favorite handle shape
Urban, I don’t know why it feels better than the UKPK, but it does.
Gayle Bradley 1, how to get the cutting edge right up to the fore finger.
And the big surprise for me has been the Pacific Salt, it even balances on the front finger.

Re: Rock Jumper Thread
Sal, one quick question about the Rock jumper. One handed closing seems important to the design. My muscle memory for backlocks is based around catching the blade on the kick with my finger, will that still be possible with the design you are working up?

Re: Rock Jumper Thread
I think we have to be careful of assuming our experiences of climbing are the same. Climbing is a broad church. I know virtually nothing of big wall aid climbing, but know enough to realise it is very different in terms of equipment and techniques from the trad climbing with half ropes which I have ...

I’m not quite sure if the pics will show, but this thread reminded my of 3 of my classics; SS ats-55 Police, G10 Police and 440v Milli. https://edgematters.uk/wcf/attachment/78890-dc10e0e8-679b-4862-9a8d-ffad935f2439-jpeg/ https://edgematters.uk/wcf/attachment/78890-dc10e0e8-679b-4862-9a8d-ffad935f2...

Distribute the Spydercos That was genuinely hilarious, thank you :D TriggerThumb, thanks for the interesting read; a very useful overview. Every day is a school day. When I read Sal’s post: “We've set up distributors all over the world to try to get the product to our customers and service their ne...

What do Spyderco’s Distributor’s do?
I’ve realised from recent threads that I don’t actually know what Spyderco’s distributors do and how they add value for the additional money they cost us. Any ideas?

Re: Taking apart knives
Reading this thread has been rather an emotional journey. A classic opener from Sal, explaining the problem and doing what Spyderco does best, listening to customers. Sure enough, the customers spoke. Then it all took a bit of a downturn as it seemed to me that a few members were telling others that...

Re: ranking toughest / least chippy steels
So I know a lot depends of the heat treat, blade grind, geometry, thickness, etc. But all of that being equal, so say a model like a PM2, where there have been a large number of different steels, which ones do you think would hold up to the most abuse without chipping? I think it general people tal...

Re: age to carry a knife
The days and attitudes of my youth are long gone. I got my first knife when I was 6 years old. However, in my culture boys were taught knife safety and use from very early. The same was true for firearms. I don't have any boys, but that's about the age that both of my daughters got their first kniv...

Re: Maniago and Sharp Blades
I don’t think there’s a definite pattern to it.
My Elmax Urban was one of the sharpest and definitely the sharpest spine and spyderhole I’ve ever touched and my Hossom Forager one of the bluntest. The K390 Pingo was somewhat thicker edged than the Urban, but still sharp.

Re: Bamboo vs. H1 serrations
If you’ve got a sharpmaker, may be lay a white rod on a flat surface and try edge trailing stroke flat to the top corner.
I’ve used the end of a diamond rod (which is just steel with no diamonds) to roll serrations back on a cheap kitchen knife.

Re: Sharpmaker - what else do you use?
Although I’ve got a few stones including a water stone, I use an 8 inch Norton Crystalon Coarse/Fine for reprofiling and I always microbevel on the Sharpmaker. The one big advantage of the Crystalon over Diamond plates is that you can use more pressure without stripping diamonds off. I’ve got DMT di...

Re: Calling all Canadians - Canadian knife discussion
Just a thought, the pronounced half-stop on my Urban and Pingo makes flicking open very difficult. Half-stops aren’t a traditional part of locking knives, but including one in a design may mean they can only be opened in a slower more deliberate way. I don’t need OHO in less than a second, just the ...

apparently it’s a “Wootz steel” which is a type of Damascus or layered knife steel even though you can’t see any layers Uhhh... Wootz eh? That's an interesting claim. And you think it's got invisible layers? Hmmm. Sorry OP, I think you're getting snookered for an easy $200. The puukko looks nice th...

I actually like the balance of the Pacific Salt because it balances on my front finger, like my favourite small and mid sized fixed blades. Agreed though, balance does make a surprising difference. My Atlantic Salt is actually blade heavy and doesn’t feel a comfortable as the Pacific.

Re: Sal Glesser Bowie...at last!
I was surprised to see recently cpm154 actually has impressive hardness at high rc. Perhaps that's why. Saw this on bladeforums today or maybe yesterday https://i.imgur.com/gqWlQ3s.png I tend to think of d2 as tough, but per that, at about the same rc, cpm154 has it beat by quite a bit. That’s a re...
