Re: Toughness Rankings for Low Alloy Carbon Steels
Well done Larrin. Several of the steels you used for this study are capable of being heat treated to bainitic structures. I recommend inclusion of that information in the next chapter. It has been more difficult than expected to get austempered/bainitic heat treatments performed on steel. A now-dec...

Toughness Rankings for Low Alloy Carbon Steels
Summary of toughness measurements on a range of low alloy steels like 52100 and Blue Super. Then an explanation of what factors control the toughness of low alloy steels. And information on how heat treatment affects the toughness of these steels. https://knifesteelnerds.com/2020/02/17/ranking-tough...

Re: N690 vs N690Co on roadie
I have no idea to be honest. N690Co and N690 are the same, and a lot more companies are marking them as N690 or N690Co.......I have no explanation why. Maybe the variant with Co sounds cooler? Like why name your steel Vanadis 4E, when you can name it Vanadis 4 Extra (!!!!! +20 % moar cool!) Urban i...

Larrin, just to let you know that we are waiting for article update :D Ok I will get on it right away. Hello Larrin, Did you receive the steel for testing by any chance? Just excited to see your results. As I always write in signature of my emails - hope to hear from you soon :D I heard today that ...

Re: HAP40 or REX45?
From what I understand, some steels pair well with certain stainless steels, and can be heat treated for optimal performance. Are there some steels that don't pair well with stainless steels, making it difficult to heat treat? Not that I'm saying this is the issue with Spyderco's Hap40. This topic ...

Re: HAP40 or REX45?
When laminated steel is heat treated they need to account for both steels. The outer SS requires a different heat treatment to a plain slab of HAP40. Many laminated steels are heat treated sub-optimally. The stainless hardening temperatures are too high for the low alloy steels (like stainless over...

Re: HAP40 or REX45?
The properties are identical. It’s the same steel. Perhaps I'm missing something, but I was very much under the impression that while Rex45 & Hap40 were quite similar, their actual make-up was slightly different, and I thought the heat-treat typically done to them was rather different. I will s...

Re: Super Blue
The carbide structure of blue super is probably pretty fine. Powder metallurgy wouldn't affect it much.avocadobbq wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2020 12:08 amDoes anyone know of any powdered metallurgy or spray formed steels similar to Super Blue? I love Super Blue but I think the finer grain structure is also neat.

Re: CPM SPY27 steel
I wonder if this will sort of feel like a stainless cruwear. Sharpens up to a nice razor edge easily. Maintains that high level of sharpness a little better than high vanadium steels like s110v and even s30v and it could address the constant complaints of burnt chippy edges from the factory with th...

SPY27 is the new "Stainless sharpener's steel". Props to Spyderco for making it happen.
Anyone know which foundry it's out of?

Re: S35VN Steel History and Properties
Larrin, the following was somewhat already discussed in the "LC 200" thread, may I ask for your opinion on it?: There are those who say that if S35VN is an "upgrade" over S30V at all, than mostly for knife makers (cause it is easier to work with) than for knife users . I am a to...

Re: S35VN Steel History and Properties
Hello Larrin. You brought up CPM 154 and M390 as "both have higher than expected toughness". One steel that rates pretty high on your chart is 19C27. I keep on wondering why it would be rated as highly as it is. Is it because the chrome is only 13% ? It is a 1% carbon steel like others ra...

Re: S35VN Steel History and Properties
Great read as usual Larrin! I have to ask though...I’ve read most of your articles and have never come across you stating that you prefer/like any one particular steel over another. Do you have a favorite in stainless and non-stainless steels? I’m assuming you have to remain neutral like parents do...
