Re: best steel type for flint fire strikers?

The tang of a file is usually still in the annealed state. Check it & see how soft & bendy it is compared to the rest of the file.

Re: best steel type for flint fire strikers?

As to the steel, you want it hard but not so hard that your rock won't scrape bits of it off. Smooth is best also, so grind the teeth off a file.

Anywhere is what YOU make it.
Given that I would not like to live in some snow bound waste land, but the spring & autumn (fall) are beautiful.
Queensland is not all palm trees.
Next time you go to what you think is paradise have a good look & you will see someone pissing on it & crying.

Re: best steel type for flint fire strikers?

You mention flint lock rifles a few times. Do you understand how they work ? Look more into that & get things the correct way around. You don't strike the rock with the steel. The flint strikes the steel frizzen at about a 60 degree angle, scraping down the face with a sharp edge & scraping ...

No. China does not necessarily mean "cheap". iPhones, for example, are produced in China.
Argh! They are made in China because they can do it the cheapest.

They are sold to you by apple who is ripping you off.

Re: Quality Chinese Steels

The Chinese can make anything from anything & of any quality. The marketing choice is to make something cheap enough that looks like something that it not necessarily is. If quality is poor look to the importer who puts his name on it & maximizes his profit by having the product made as chea...
