Dear Karnigy: I'm not up to speed on currently available razors. I'd recommend that you do a Google search and look for something that has a strong handle construction as well as a sharp blade. As for the foldover grip, it is a grip that places the razor's blade in front of your knuckles. Hold an op...

Martial Blade Camp 2004

To all: Registration has begun for the 2004 Martial Blade Camp, which will be conducted 10-13 September at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado, adjacent to the beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park. Like last year, this year's camp will include a comprehensive review of MBC Level 1-4 sk...

Dear Neophyte: 4 s ter got it right when he explained that blade length is not measured exclusively by the length of the sharpened edge. When measuring blades, I always recommend that you measure the longest possible distance from the tip of the blade to the handle, just to make sure. I recently des...

Dear Mort: I'm glad you finally got your rig from Mike. He does great work and probably does the best tuned sheaths in the business; however, like most custom work from one-man shops, you have to wait for it. I'm glad you consider your sheath worth the wait. I recently got a cool shoulder rig for a ...

Mine would be James Keating. He is the original Master at Arms and was the first modern instructor to have both the stones and the skills to offer responsible knife training to the public. Virtually everyone who's anyone in knife training today has learned a lot from Jim, whether they acknowledge it...

Dear Berzerker: You're welcome. With regard to MBC classes, I've had a lot of inquiries from folks in the northeast, but haven't gotten a solid offer for a seminar venue yet. Right now, Ohio is as far east as I'm going, but I've still had very good participation from folks on the easter seaboard. Be...

Dear Berzerker: According to the 2004 catalog, the blade thickness is 5/32-inch. I don't know if this has been changed during the prototype and testing phase, but the last sample I saw was consistent with this dimension. If all goes well, we should all be able to find out firsthand in about a month ...

Dear Karnigy: Spyderco tests the locks on all its knives with a hydraulic press hooked to a computer sensor. It precisely measures the pressure at which the lock fails. My understanding is that an MBC-rated lock has to withstand 200 pounds of pressure per inch of blade length. As such, the Yojimbo w...

Dear Horizonseeker: Thanks for the question. At the time the Spyderco catalog was published, the Spyderco headquarters was the primary location for MBC training. The catalog description therefore focused on the policy for classes held at that facility. Since then, Spyderco has repurposed the MBC tra...

Dear Blade5:

Slight hawkbills that have points close to the centerline of the knife are actually very good cutters. By not dropping the point too low, they also retain decent thrusting function. As such, I rate them a pretty good choice.

Stay safe,

Thanks to Ohio MBCers

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in this weekend's MBC Level 1 and 2 and Martial Stick Craft classes in Grove City, Ohio. As always, we attracted a super group of people that was truly motivated to practice and learn. And, as always, we covered a ton of information and developed a lot of ...

Change to 2004 MBC Classes in Colorado

Due to changing business requirements, Spyderco was forced to repurpose the MBC training facility on its campus. They are in the process of r...

Dear timlara: Thanks for the question and thanks also to all those who responded and shared their thoughts. Dear Glcokman: You are correct. That's why I consider the Endura (and the Delica) "MBC worthy," even though they're not, by Spyderco's standards, "MBC rated" when it comes to locks. The MBC rating is a good thing and a very ambitious standard. If I had the choice, I would want al...
